Why would someone do this?

I went swimming with my daughter at the rec center yesterday. We share a lane and usually swim for almost an hour. Guy gets into the lane next to us, and spends a few minute adjusting his goggles, and putting on some kind of swim mitts. Then he starts to swim. I swear, he swam for less than ten minutes, maybe 6 laps? And then got out. He appeared to be in his 60's, healthy, strong enough. Seriously, he spent more time preparing for his swim than he actually spent in the pool. What the what? My daughter said she saw him last week, too, and he did the same thing. I figure if I have to suit up and drive to the rec, obeying all the new rules in place, I'm gonna get my money's worth. Go figure.

Being elderly and a very regular year round swimmer until the last couple of years, I know there could be a lot going on health wise with him that you can’t see, that his 6 laps may actually represent an achievement! Goggles possibly due to an eye condition. I’ve been a life long swimmer, instructor & all and I was well up in years before the chemicals started bothering my eyes enough to wear goggles all the time. Arthritis in hands may account for the swim mitts to get a good stroke. I’ve considered trying them Physical looks don’t always correlate with perfect health. Me, I’d congratulate the guy for doing even that much and doing it regularly.

I'm not judging, you understand. It just seems odd. And you could certainly be right -- health problems that aren't obvious. But he didn't seem worn out or whatever. But who knows. I'm just glad I can swim as many laps as I do.

There are times when I get involved doing something... gardening for instance, and I'll get myself all setup with everything I need... shovel, garden trowel, cultivating fork, bucket, knee-pads on, and after a few turns of the soil, I put all away, go back inside, shower, and call it a day.

Now the above doesn't happen regularly... rarely in fact, but my point being, maybe the man just didn't have it in him yesterday. He did a few laps, thought, to heck with this for today, and he was out of there.

My example is just one of many scenarios I can think of as to why someone would cut-short a session of fitness so soon.

I went out for a walk this morning. Brushed my teeth, got dressed, put on my walking shoes, put on a hat, smeared on some sunscreen, searched for my sunglasses, found my phone, made sure I had a tissue with me, had a drink of water. That took at least 10-15 minutes.

I got to the end of the block, just about passed out from the heat and humidity (it felt like the surface of the sun) and turned around and went home. I was probably not more than five minutes outside.

Ah, well...….

At least your intentions were good!

This is why I don't like using public facilities. Instead of minding their own affairs, people watch and criticise what others are doing.
