When it comes to modern day electronics/ wifi/computors etc I am truly dense. Oh, sure I can get netflix, google, forums, etc BUT I have a hard time understanding what works and how it works.
So, can anyone tell me if a cell phone can pick up a wifi signal so I can check my email messages on gmail.com ?

Your posts tells me you are like many using cellphones/smartphones in limited ways you are familiar with without understanding how, what, why. Also that you are not familiar how to search for answers on the web because if you did, you would easily do so to answer your question searching with the term "wifi" on google or yahoo, etc. Your situation is common for at least 40% of smartphone users. You would have also at least indicated whether you use an Apple iPhone or Android smartphone or have a simpler cellphone phone only without Internet access. If the latter, you will likely need to read documentation on your specific cellphone model to connect for text messages. Also are you on a prepaid contract mobile plan?

If you own a smartphone please provide some information. If you are at home and have an Internet connection, you are probably connecting through a wireless wifi router with a password that connects to a gateway adapter that connects to whatever physical media your Internet provider uses to connect into your areas residences. That appliance likely has a security firewall requiring a password and may incorporate a wireless wifi router for a one box solution. Outside your home there are many open wifi systems you might also connect to but to do so requires a password. For instance at MacDonalds restaurants.

Yes, it's a good idea to provide details such as brand/model of phone, and operating system.

Find Settings in your phone. If it's buried out of sight, ask someone to put it on your screen so you don't have to hunt for it every time.

I have a Samsung A-11 with Android. After clicking on Settings, I see this:

After clicking on Connections, I see this:

Tap where it says Wi-Fi. The blue, with the dot in the right-hand position, indicates that wifi is on.

Next, you will see the available network(s). Click on the one you're going to use.

You may be asked for a password, or asked to "agree" to the terms of use. If password, the employee (or your host) will provide it.

Sometimes there is more to know. At that point you can ask someone for help (e.g., restaurant or library employee, or whoever's wifi you're using).

I hope that helps!

Currently I do not have a cell phone that can get wifi. But i am thinking about purchasing one.
One of the things that drives me crazy are the tiny, tiny buttons. Once i tried to use a smart phone to send a text message BUT my finger tips are way too large and I kept getting the wrong letters.

I use the microphone button and just talk to the phone to write the message. Several years ago I'd get hilarious results but the voice recognition is much better now. Still get some wrong words (like I'll say 'billed' and the phone will use 'build'), but it saves a lot of typing.

I tried (expensive) voice recognition 20 years ago. I have a quiet voice and had to speak louder than I wanted to. And then I'd have to manually correct the weird parts. So I stopped using it.

I'm sure it's a lot better now. Something to think about!

Wow ! Learn something new every day. :)

I got a phone with a stylus (kind of like a pen but metal) built to go in it. I had a finger tip problem, too, but using the stylus is very helpful. My phone is the MotoGStylus.

David777 said, "Also that you are not familiar how to search for answers on the web". Anything you want to know about anything is on web. And it's pretty easy to use. I grew up with having a "booklet" that came with electronic gear. You get a iPhone, -aint got no booklet. It's on YouTube. And I have problems with those tiny key pads too,, but iPhone will take certain voice commands - that may help.

I have an iphone XR. I forgot my password so can't download any apps. I have been working senseless for the last 2 months trying to get my password. I have gone to the Apple Store 3 times. No real help! I have texted Apple Help several times. They promise to phone me in 2 or 3 weeks and even give me the date, the hour and the minute but they never do. If you ask me, Apple customer service really sucks! I speak from experience!

Update: Just got permission from Apple to change my password. WOW! I am so happy but I'm wondering why it took 2 months? Guess Apple isn't really known for its speed.
