Eclipse America 2024

The solar eclipse of April 8, 2024, will be total in a narrow path from Mexico to Eastern Canada and partial to the northwest and southeast. Yellow curves indicate how much of the Sun is covered by the Moon outside the path of totality. The difference between a total solar eclipse and a partial one is literally the difference between night and day, so get yourself into the path of totality if you can.

Would have liked to on its Texas path however my beloved sister passed away there early in the pandemic so no longer have relatives or even friends along its path. Otherwise will be extremely busy during that period, and long distance traveling for this peon is expensive. Although it my be the last chance to do so in my lifetime, I was in Salem, Oregon for the last 100% solar eclipse that was an utterly amazing experience I'll always greatly value as an Earth creature.

Naa. I'll stay inside.

Saw all the eclipses I wanted to see on the Saturday morning TV serials, back 1950s. Seems like every series had a total eclipse sometime. Scattered all the natives and wildlife every whichway it did.

Yes, I will see it. Kind of a bittersweet occasion for me. April 8th is the 4 year anniversary of my our best family friends passing and the following day is my birthday.

The last time I talked with our best friend was April 8th. He always calls me the day before my birthday. He knows I don't like birthdays since my husband died. We were on the phone about 1 1/2 hours just chatting.

At about 7 that night I got a call from a hospital, I was listed as next of kin and emergency contact. He had been brought in by ambulance and they were working on him. They asked if had blood family, he did, two brothers but they had not been close for years. They asked me to contact them, which I did.
Then they called to let me know he had passed. It was such a shock, we had been on the phone earlier in the day, everything was fine. It was a heart attack.

His ashes are here right next to my husband. I had to get them to sign off but I had his preplanned paid for death services with me. His brothers knew how much we loved him and gave their written consent.

I think this is maybe his okay that he and my husband are back together, not to worry. I hope it will give me peace about the future, knowing they are both there waiting and it will be fine.

I'm in northern Ohio so in the path, and yes I will take a look at it but don't feel it's a big deal. I know this one's a total eclipse but I've seen enough partials that I'm good. On the news there's talk of 200,000 people flooding into the area to observe it, which seems like a lot of hassle for a couple of minutes of viewing, but any excuse for a party.

A total solar eclipse is IMO a far far more worthwhile experience of a lifetime than partial or annular eclipses because one's whole landscape darkens, stars appear above, and the atmosphere nearby of sun itself behind our Moon glows amazingly around its black void. And I would highly recommend watching it within a large group of other people like at a park or organized event where one will hear others in sounds of awe, some weeping at its wonder, many with deeply religious feelings to their creaturely core.

Our remarkably large moon since its bolide crashed into the Earth in its earliest period that has been moving further and further away from Earth over billions of years, is one of the strongest physical evidences that Earth is a life zoo for advanced race of entities. Remarkably, just when we intelligent apes have come into existence, the distance between the Earth and Moon is coincidentally the optimum distance to just barely cover the sun. Not only that but it provides a rare axis tilt providing seasons, tides, and added a iron metal core to our planet creating a magnetosphere deflecting harmful high energy particles from our sun and other stars that would otherwise cause DNA cancers.

Yes, coincidence or planetary engineering? No no... We have never been alone in this infinite eternal Universe.

Right in the path. Several communities are making a big deal of it & it's expected to bring in a large influx of people in to view it.

We decided with so many coming into the area, we aren't going in where on the roads that day & are just staying put at home. I talked to one neighbor today who said the same thing.

April 8 is a Monday so many of us can't witness it. Prepare yourselves for how
fast if you can witness it that the temps drop in those 4 minutes or so of total Eclipse.
Then the Dew drops spring out just like in the evening, but 15 minutes or so later your
warm again the Dew evaporates and soon its normal again. I have been in 2 so far.
I was playing golf during the first which was almost a total. only a rim showed. As I
Walked to the next green, the dew evaporated, and the weird light departed.
We think we will go there again this year to once again witness how weird it is.
It most likely depends on the Mid West weather forecast. Heavy Clouds mess up the view.

We’re going to buy our glasses ahead of time. Still will be overpaying. Want to get some that aren’t made in China.

My GGD’s school district is closing for the day. Wise move. Teachers can’t be responsible for making sure little kids don’t decide to take a peak.

Many US schools even hundreds of miles from the path of totality are closing that Monday primarily because of traffic concerns. We're going up the Thursday before because weekend traffic will be brutal.

The mods wrote that summary. OK. Thanks mods.

Shall I do a rewrite? The solar eclipse coming to a state near you is a cool phenomenon in which the sun DISAPPEARS behind the moon, or seemingly so. It is sure to terrify and mystify millions!

It can also been seen over parts of Mexico and in Gander, Newfoundland! Eclipse 2024: When is it and where can I see it? (I want to visit Gander.)

We in the states won't see another total Solar Eclipse over the country for many years to come: NASA - Solar Eclipse Page.

Oh, I think it's going to be a great tourist draw! Start knitting Eclipse Cozies to sell on side of road. Yup - someone already has an Etsy store going. This are kind of lame gifts, however. I don't see a lot of cleverness to them.

Definitely. I'm on a FB group for the area near my brother's land. One woman made Airbnb reservations for $450.00 a night many months ago. Had the host contact her some time later canceling her reservations. She checked the listing later and they were asking $3,500.00 a night. She kept checking and someone booked it for that price!

Another person on the group had a rental booked to people from the UK who had to cancel because there were no flights available a reasonable driving distance (US 'reasonable driving distance', not UK lol) from the rental.

There's a guy on the group with land right under the path of totality who has rented a band, porta potties and concession trailers. He's divided his property into 700 8'x10' areas per vehicle and is charging $500 for parking for the slots just for the day. Has already sold them all.
