Winnipeg is currently colder than Mars and the North Pole is warmer than Winnipeg.

Brrr…Record-setting U.S. cold next week

The weather forecast models continue to predict a major cold outbreak for next week over the eastern 2/3 of the U.S. Here’s the Tuesday morning (Jan. 7) forecast for 850 mb temperatures from the GFS model (that’s at ~5,000 ft altitude):



That is a seriously cold air mass. I predict many cold temperature records will be broken with this event. It looks like solid freezes extending into northern Florida.

But look on the bright side. Without global warming, it could have been 1-2 deg. F colder still!
 
Winnipeg = Winterpeg. It's been really cold here too but no where near those temps. Bundle up to all who are experiencing this freezing weather and stay safe!
 
But you know those crazy Canadians are probably thinking about how bad it is down under, where the temps are near +50C.:playful:

Here is copy of the forecast for my area, the temps are in F not C but it doesn't make all that much difference when it gets that cold.

Surprisingly few people seem to die of heatstroke here. We hear of them dropping like flies in a 'heatwave' of 36C (kidding aren't they?) in Europe but not here.

I guess we'd be dropped like 'flies' if we got a blizzard and then Canadians would wonder about that.
 
If I lived in Winnipeg in the Winter I would be expecting the SES to rescue me whenever it snowed on my house.

I stayed there once in late Summer and heard tales of Winter. Frostbite is something to watch out for. If you see someone with a white spot on their nose, ears or face you have to remind them to rub it to keep the blood flowing.

Everything is back to front as far as I was concerned. For example, the locals lose weight in Winter and gain it in Summer. This is because in Winter they are physically active - skating, skiing and playing ice hockey and in Summer, all two months of it, they lie around on deck chairs trying to get a tan. Me, I'd be inside all Winter huddled next to the furnace.

Speaking of furnaces, their houses are brilliantly designed for cold weather with a basement for the furnace and utility rooms. They don't hang the washing on an outdoor line because it freezes and cracks. It either goes through the drier or hangs in the basement until it dries in the warm air. Snow can pile up around the house, completely covering the basement and half the next floor so the drainage systems have to be able to carry away all the melt water to avoid flooding of the house.
