Winter Is Here (for some) Don't Slip And Fall

Sweetie went to get the mail and the steps were wet and she fell straining ligaments in one knee and breaking two toes as her leg folded under her. After hours in the Emergency Room we limped out with a medical boot on her foot, crutch and moving very slow. X-ray, scan etc., and the doctor told her that her weight needs some attention and printed out a suggested diet. I looked at the doctors report which showed her weight and ''said is this correct'' and she said, ''just don't say anything'' and I said, ''big woman mak-em good squall'' and gave her a kiss. ( and thought to myself its a damn good things I didn't have to carry you to the truck.) We were lucky as it could have been a hip...Please be careful everyone!!

Oh Ouch poor Mrs Norman...:( I hope she's coping with the pain, and doesn't take too long to recover. WE had the first real frost of the year today. When hubs left for work at 6am this morning it was Minus 4...

As we go prepare to move to an area that has cold winters and snow, I've told Janet that I will wear my climbing helmet, crampons and hip pads when I am out and about in the snow and ice, and I will use ski poles for additional support. She told me she wouldn't be caught dead in such a getup. I told her, "Exactly!"

I hope Mrs. Norman feels better soon. Yep, we do got to watch it out there, I feel a couple years back and broke a shoulder. Ouch.

@treeguy64 I just bought a set of crampons. I think they will work well. Have only used them once so far, but seem pretty sturdy

I've made a lot of dumb mistakes in my life, but leaving Connecticut in 1977 isn't one of them. These last winters have been brutal there. Here it snows once in about five years and it's melted by noon the next day.

Had a really cold spell here in Houston last week and today we hit 80. Went from flannel jammies to tees and shorts today. I don't get out when its too cold. I try to plan ahead so I can stay in when it is cold.

Wishing your Sweetie a speedy recovery norman, falling on snow and ice is a big fear of mine, luckily we don’t get much of it in my part of the world

Ouch! Hope Mrs.Norman heals quickly!

I don`t need snow and ice to help me fall down though. Saturday was grandson`s last college football game (well,at least at this college) As we all went on to the field to greet him when he came out of the locker room,I got distracted by his team coming out with one of their coaches, shirtless and "decorated", on their shoulders. He was carried over to the stands, where he then proposed to his girlfriend.

I was walking over to see what the heck they were doing and not watching where I was walking.Well, someone had set their things on the grass-stadium seats, blankets, etc.,and I fell right over them.Tried to catch myself, but knew that wasn`t going to work.So I just let myself fall.Ended up on my back, laughing my head off.

Everyone said it was the most graceful fall they`ve ever seen,so at least there was that lol.

Here is what distracted me...A69I1982.jpgA69I1982.jpg

That is a shame Norman, I hope that the pain goes
away quickly, but at least you can spoil her for a while.

Mike.

Sorry to hear about your wife. Hope she heals quickly. So glad I live where it doesn't ice up much, and now when it does, I can just stay home. But I was walking my dogs a while back, and a big, friendly, over-enthusiastic dog came bounding up to us. He jumped up on the back of my leg and nearly knocked me down. Scared me after the fact, when I thought I could easily have broken something had I fallen.

My greatest fear. Falling. The worst is snow covering ice. You are unaware.
I do take a walking stick with me now for balance.
Fortunately our city is prepared and keeps the sidewalks clear and even sands them.
I'm on a bus route and they are the first to get plowed.

We hope for a great recovery.

Wow! Do they allow off leash in your area?

We get something called black ice in the winter. It looks like water, but it's actually ice. Very treacherous to seniors, it's caused many broken hips.

I just ordered a pair of Crampons from Amazon to use when I run the snow blower. I did slip and fall two times last winter while running it and would not have fallen if I had these. I talked to a guy who was wearing tennis shoes and fell and broke his hip on wet ice, he said he was just standing still not moving and the next moment he was on the ground in pain. He had surgery and rehabilitation totally disrupting his life style. Sweetie's fall and injury has totally been a wake-up call for us. She is healing very well, but it is slow, no rehabilitation, just tender loving care from me.. lol
