Wishing you the BEST with your FOOT operation tomorrow JimW

HI Jim,glad to hear the foot surgery went well Sue

Thanks Sue!

I'm already tired of sitting on the couch and I feel guilty asking my wife to do things for me. I'm looking forward to getting back to work.

Went to the Doc today for my first follow up and he says everything looks great. When the nurse removed my bandages I could see right away that the foot was much straighter than before. I still have some pain & swelling but nothing out of the ordinary. He made a total of 5 incisions, 2 long cuts on either side of my ankle (one to cut the heel bone and move it over, the other to cut and move one of the tendons from my small toes over to the tendon that supports the arch), one on the top of my foot to drill a hole through a bone to attach and anchor the new tendon, one in the back of my heel to install the anchor screws in my heel bone and one on the back of my calf to loosen some of the tissue in my calf muscle so my new "tighter and straighter foot" will be able to move without restriction. He said I have around 60/65 stitches total. He gave me the okay to go back to work tomorrow, so that's one step in getting back to normal.

60 to 65 stitches ?
Ouch! It sure sounds painful but if you can’t wait to get back to work , then I suppose you are doing well and can handle it.
Its really good that you notice a difference right away in that your foot is straighter.
We look forward to having you join us in walking again

This is the longest incision on my foot/leg, it has approx. 35 stitches. You can also see the small hole on top of my foot where he went in with a drill bit and the incision on the back of my calf (right where my leg hits the chair) where he "loosened" the muscle tissue to prevent my foot from locking up.

Then there's the other side where he cut the back part of my heel bone. You can tell he really beat this side up when you compare it to the pic above. The swelling and bruising on this side is much worse, my foot looks like a big fat sausage, lol.

And the other cut in the heel.

Oh altho' it looks swollen and still bruised, that's a very neat scar..so I would imagine it will heal nicely.. I hope it's not too sore...

I'm presuming you'll be able to sit at work will you?

Thanks Holly! It's not too sore now, the first few days were pretty bad though.

This Dr did a great job so far as I can tell, all of the cuts are neat and will hopefully heal with minimal scarring. He came highly recommended by my primary care doctor. My primary care doc gave me a list of 3 different foot surgeons I could go to, but put a star beside this guy's name and told me he was the one he would go to if he needed surgery. Very nice guy too.

I am back to work today, sitting at my desk.

Oh my goodness Jim. And you’re going to work like that. OUCH! That looks very sore but your foot does look VERY straight

Heres to it healing perfectly

The cuts are all wrapped in gauze and protective bandages and I have a splint that runs from the underneath of my toes, under the heel and about 3/4 of the way up my lower leg and it's all wrapped in place with an ace bandage. Next Friday they remove the stitches and put on a permanent cast for 4 to 6 weeks.

Yes, I'm hoping to be better than before this all happened.

Went and got my stitches out on Friday and an x-ray of my foot, the doc says everything looks good! The foot feels pretty good and I'm off the pain meds. I am now wearing an aircast boot for at least a month. Still no walking or driving or any weight on my foot, but we're moving along.

My new foot for a month looks like this:

Hi Jim,thanks for giving us an update, your surgery went well.
Your walking boot looks like the one I had to wear couple years ago after I fractured my toe next to the big one on right foot.I had to wear walking boot for 6 weeks.
If you follow your doctors orders, maybe by next March you'll be able to do a jig on St. Patrick's Day Sue

Follow your doctor's orders, Jim. That's the most important thing.

One of my brothers-in-law is pretty sure he knows more than the orthopedist and is following his own schedule. As a result, his foot isn't getting better.

Thanks Jujube! I'm doing everything I can to make sure it heals the way it's supposed to. I don't need any lingering complications.

Thanks Sue! I bet a fractured toe is quite painful. I hope to be up and about by March for sure. Once I'm able to get around there's a few things I want to do more of like hiking with my wife and the dogs. It's amazing how much one takes for granted until you can't do those things anymore.

Very smart looking.

But why not dress it up with a few decorative flames, maybe?

Good idea RR! Those flames would look good on my new knee scooter too. This scooter is really saving my shoulders from a lot of pain. I need a bell and some handle bar streamers though, lol.

Maybe you should quit watching Patriot games until it's well healed. The way they're playing lately, you might lash out and kick the foot rest - - - with the WRONG foot!!!

No kidding Dave, they don't look good so far. I kinda saw this coming though, BB alienated a lot of players by not playing Butler in the Superbowl and he did little to improve the team in the off season. They needed linebackers, defensive backs and wide receivers and BB takes a running back with the first pick??

Glad to hear you are doing well. I hope you can get a nice warm sock over the toes when the cold weather sets in.

Thanks Ruth! They do make special socks just for casts. They are loose fitting so they go over your foot and leg without pressure. They go all the way up to the knee and have good thickness to keep the foot and toes warm. Below are the socks I bought.
