The woman who fell down a New York City manhole and died seconds after getting out of her Mercedes has been named as a much-loved grandmother.

Donike Gocaj was killed on Monday evening after parking her car outside Cartier's flagship store on Fifth Avenue and plunging into the open hole.

The 56-year-old, who lived in a $1.1 million home in Briarcliff Manor in Westchester County, was described as 'a loving mother to a son and daughter and a loving grandmother to two grandchildren,' according to a loved one who spoke to ABC7.

The tragedy happened outside Cartier's flagship New York store on Fifth Avenue around 11.20pm on Monday night.

Con Edison, which is responsible for the manhole and several others in the city, said no construction work was ongoing and it was investigating what happened.

A spokesman for the power company said the cover was found around 15 feet away.

it says it was unclear whether the fencing was erected after her death.... well a 2 year old could work out the answer tothat question

Photos from the scene show the Mercedes car still parked, with the manhole sitting just to the left of the driver's door.

It appeared to have been given a temporary plastic covering in the wake of the tragedy.
Awful final words of grandma who fell to her death down NYC manhole

The same thing happened to my next-door neighbour's sister. She was walking down the main street after coming from the bank when she stepped on the manhole which hadn't been fitted correctly after the council had finished working there (according to witnesses). Her whole life changed dramatically after that. She sustained a broken jaw, both legs broken and broken arms, spinal injuries. She was incapacitated for many months an.d it's still ongoing, after many years. She sued the council and received a large compensation. She was lucky she didn't die like the poor woman in NYC.

jeez that poor woman she'll be in pain for the rest of her life.....:(

More than likely a vehicle dislodged the cover earlier in the evening. Pretty sad, no matter the cause.

I had occasion in Salt Lake City ~ 1984 during a wet spring where the city streets were undermined by running water causing a massive sink hole to open up and swallow me and my truck. The pavement held together and was more or less level, but was about 5 feet below street level. The tow company wanted to bill me for the recovery, but I was able to convince them to bill the city instead. Those were the broke and pre credit card days.

OMG..how terrifying... jeez I bet your heart nearly stopped !

Tragic and shows how distracted people can be even if she wasn't on a phone or talking to someone else. And also many take a familiar route for granted.

Since the lid not near the hole either someone tried swiping it or it was moved out the way if was laying in the street by a driver/passer by. Con Edison said there was no construction at the location but that doesn't a maintain worker when in the hole for a quick test or survey and forgot the lid.

Rip
