Woman & Family Living In Her Car For Seven Months-But....

So a local business man donated $2000 to her so she could live in a motel and will give her another $1000 if residents match that amount. She has two young children but she also has two dogs. First, I don't know why this story made the five o'clock news because food for three people and two dogs with the motel bill won't last out the month. Then what? Personally, I would not give money to needy people with pets as long as there are people in need with no pets anymore than I would give a street beggar money that is smoking a cigarette @ $6 per pack. (OK animal lovers bring out your claws).

Well, I'd say some people in Houston have bigger hearts than others, to show such compassion for a stranger going through a rough time. I'd do the same as those that are offering to help them.

The woman, Maria Baez, lost her job, fell behind on her bills and was evicted. Then the pandemic hit. She tried turning her pets over to a shelter, but they would not take them. Community shows overwhelming support for homeless family

It's nice the police got involved and put them up in a hotel for a few weeks until they can find a shelter for them. I'm sure jobs are not easy to find during this pandemic.

So sad that you fail to see the big picture.

The poor woman, that's all she has is her two children and two dogs... nothing more. That is her family... her whole world... her life. It breaks my heart to the point of me not even wanting to think about it.

FM, please accept these glasses from me account your short-sightedness.

Police and firefighters save people first and later animals only if the risk is absent or very minor. Get the picture?

She has two kids and two dogs, who have all been living in a car for seven months? I'd like a little info about how she makes money to live on. And also an explanation on why she's in the predicament she's in. I kind of agree with fmdog44 in that what is she going to do after the donation runs out.. The fact that she has two dogs is irrelevant. She doesn't have to be stripped down of every possession, and naked to be given aid.

What does a community of good natured people helping out a women and her family have to do with what the police and firefighters do? What do they even have to do with this story? Of course I don’t expect you to answer but I don’t understand why you are complaining about the generosity and heart felt concern of others. Nobody can be dedicated where to place their compassion., especially not you.
Miserable! šŸ™„

I agree about someone having pets, cell phones, cigarettes & other luxuries needing help. But, if she tried to leave her dogs at a shelter & no one else could take them in, what else could she do with them?
People have a lifestyle based on their current financial status. But that can change through no fault of their own.

She has one 16 year old son plus the two dogs. There is always a back story to these stories, but I'm glad Houstonians are pitching in to help them out.

No surprise! You should find her and send her a check to cover the dog food and vet expenses.

Street beggars come from all walks of life, don't be choosy who you give money to. One time I saw a man dressed in a suit, clean cut, standing on a corner holding up a sign that read, "Will work for $40,000 a year". He got a job for that much a year. And he got in a magazine with his picture in it. There are hurting people out there, and when using discression when dolling out the dollars and you can really help them.

I love dogs and I take care of mine not those belonging to others.

i don’t have to because the compassionate people around her did. Nobody asked you to help feed her dogs so I don’t understand why you are b*tching about the kindness of others. Are you seriously that miserable that the mere thought of others showing kindness drives you nuts?

Yes no surprise that I’d help someone who has pets , being the nasty evil person I am. šŸ˜±āœŒļøšŸ¤Ŗ

I have more respect for the homeless woman holding onto her furry pet (at all costs), than I do those some scumbag that has a roof over their heads, drives a vehicle, and is employed, but so chooses to release their pet or pets into some dark alley or desolate country road somewhere, and then drive away, because they grew tired of caring for their dog, cat, whatever.

Kudos to the woman.

My dogs are family. They depend on me to care for them, 2018 myself and disabled daughter and 3 dogs were inches away from being homeless. I never once thought of leaving my dogs or going where I could not take my dogs. I never will. A person with compassion would never leave their animals. A me me me its all about me person has no problem leaving them. SMH.

I am just like you, Becky, once a family pet, always a family pet, right to the end, no exceptions.

I can't remember the words of the saying I once read, but it was to the effect of... "an animal to a human may be just a pet to some, but a human in a dog's world is their everything".

That’s right. I wouldn’t go anywhere without my family and people who heard her story relate to it cause they would have done the same thing. How does your heart not go out to someone in this type of situation? Our dogs are everything to me and there are many people who feel the same about their pets. I cried when I read this. I’m so happy that people helped her. It’s a truly heartfelt story during all this ugly pandemic stuff.

Houstonians are not, only only one businessman per the story.

Sorry, but you are flat out wrong.

Since the report aired, Maria said she has been inundated by the generous offers from others. Houstonians have called and reached out, offering to provide food, shelter and gas.

One Houston area businessman is giving back and challenging Houston to help out too.

ā€œMaria I’d like to donate a check to you for $2,000 for living expenses, rent and your animals. I do not want to separate your animals,ā€ said businessman Randy Hartley.

And he is challenging Houston to step up and donate.

ā€œI donated $2,000 and if we raise another $1,000 or more through your story then I’m going to match it with an additional thousand dollars which I think we can,ā€ Hartley said.

Rose Perez said that she felt compelled to stop by Maria’s car and offer assistance after she saw the report online.

ā€œI just felt like this was pretty in-depth compared to the things that some of us parents think are big struggles for us,ā€ Perez said. ā€œI wanted to invite them to my home or make them something to eat.ā€

The Harris County Sheriffs Office stepped in to help in a big way. HCSO has helped facilitate temporary housing for Maria and her and their animals and the family will make the move on Tuesday morning. They helped get her to a hotel for the next several weeks.

Maria Baez is just overwhelmed with the love and support from the Houston Community.

ā€œI’m the most grateful person in the world. Anything good happens to me, anything any kindness, the smallest or whatever, I am totally grateful,ā€ Maria said.

You can donate to Maria Baez’s GoFundMe account here.

People have donated gift cards for groceries and dog food for her two dogs Sugar and Bobby.

ā€œThis is just unbelievable. This is unbelievable because it’s been seven months and like nobody knew about us. We felt like we were forgotten,ā€ Baez said.
