Women and alcohol

.
Statistics are neither here nor there. A drinking culture exists almost anywhere where there is alcohol. What is important in this thread is, a mother venturing to openly express concern about her daughters, and to be met with misogynistic comments and attitude is really disappointing. So I am not really interested in statistics or win's comments.

I do not want to give mellowyellow advice, but as one mother to another, I say this – speak to your daughters, tell them exactly how their drinking is affecting you and how it is going to drastically affect their health. Speak to them and don’t hold back, You are obviously very worried and you need to sort this out with them. They may not take your advice, but at least you tried and that is all you can do.

Alcoholism is an equally destructive behavior, be it geographical, sexual groupings , economics... and we all know this

I've encounter several little old grannies that love their Mad Dog 20/20, (grape flavor)>
It was a wino drink due to price, then granny discovered it

@jerry old this happens to a lot of popular beverages.

While visiting Berlin in the late 80's, one of the popular drinks for those with little funds was Jagermeister,
on a par with Mad Dog.

Then the college crowd in the U.S. discovered it and the price just went through the roof.

Hoping the colleg kids never 'discover' my favorite Scotch, or I'm gonna have to find another brand!

THE FIVE STAGES OF DRINKING:

Stage 1 - SMART
This is when you suddenly become an expert on every subject in the known Universe. You know you know everything and want to pass on your knowledge to anyone who will listen. At this stage you are always RIGHT.
And of course the person you are talking to is very WRONG. This makes for an interesting argument when both parties are SMART.

Stage 2 - GOOD LOOKING
This is when you realise that you are the BEST LOOKING person in the entire bar and that people want you. You can go up to a perfect stranger knowing they want you and really want to talk to you. Bear in mind that you are still SMART, so you can talk to this person about any subject under the sun.

Stage 3 - RICH
This is when you suddenly become the richest person in the world. You can buy drinks for the entire bar because you have an armoured truck full of money parked behind the bar. You can also make bets at this stage, because of course, you are still SMART, so naturally you will win all your bets. It doesn't matter how much you bet 'cos you are RICH. You will also buy drinks for everyone that you fancy, because now you are the BEST LOOKING person in the world.

Stage 4 - BULLET PROOF
You are now ready to pick fights with anyone and everyone especiallythose with whom you have been betting or arguing. This is because nothing can hurt you. At this point you can also go up to the partners of the people who you fancy and challenge to a battle of wits or money. You have no fear of losing this battle because you are SMART, you are RICH and hell, you're BETTER LOOKING than they are anyway!

Stage 5 - INVISIBLE
This is the Final Stage of Drunkenness. At this point you can do anything because NO ONE CAN SEE YOU. You dance on a table to impress the people who you fancy because the rest of the people in the room cannot
see you. You are also invisible to the person who wants to fight you. You can walk through the street singing at the top of your lungs because no one can see or hear you and because you're still SMART you know all the words.

Lara, you can check the stats out in the following link. Just click on the map for each country and the stats show up...
Thanks Gemma, it appears I was wrong, men do seem to have higher rates of alcoholism, at least that is what your reference says. I did some Google research and most report similar differences with men having higher rates than women. However such statistics can be a bit misleading. For one thing there is no medical definition of alcoholism making these statistics a bit suspect. And some suggest that alcohol can have more impacts on women than men, making the problem just as bad for women as men. To quote from one article "Sex Difference in Alcoholism: Who is at a Greater Risk for Development of Alcoholic Complication?" ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2913110/ ):

Alcohol abuse and alcoholism are among the major medical problems afflicting both men and women. While men display a higher prevalence for alcoholism, it is women who suffer a much greater risk for alcoholism-associated bodily damage. Although women generally consume less alcohol compared to men, females usually suffer more severe brain and other organ damage following binge or chronic alcohol abuse.

My mother was a borderline alcoholic who at times wasn’t just borderline. No matter how fine the restaurant, she wouldn’t be satisfied with it unless they served alcohol or allowed her to BYOB. To his credit, a bartender actually once cut my mother off drink when she was in her 80’s. The worry and shame of living with her drinking have kept me off alcohol for life. Too many bad memories…

One thing about these addictions and compulsions I do believe we are responsible for our own behavior, even if we have a disease. An alcoholic is responsible for making sure they don't drive or hurt others when drunk. If they fail in that responsibility I believe they should be punished appropriately, the alcoholism should not be a legal defense.

As to who is most obnoxious when drunk, I have noticed that most anyone gets obnoxious when drunk, some more than others, men and women alike. I am the exception however, I never notice myself getting obnoxious when drinking, I think I just get wittier and wiser. Not sure others around me would agree however...
Alcoholism is used as a legal defense for drinking and driving? I agree with you that they should be punished appropriately. And btw, good for you losing weight! I applaud your inner strength to persevere.

I hope not. Wouldn't work if I were judge or jury.

It is an interesting question, has it ever been done successfully?
I can say that both men & women get sh!! Face drunk is about the identical—rude, obnoxious & plain bores.
My experience as well, unless of course it was me...

Some years ago the Scottish Government commissioned a (highly selective) report to justify raising the price of alcohol in Scotland. This mainly affects the low price / high alcohol drinks - not premium brands. Since then two further reports have suggested that while there has been a drop in alcohol related hospital admissions, there has been no significant reduction in alcohol related crime, domestic abuse etc..

Of course, people who either live near the border or who travel frequently to England, can buy their booze there - though not everything is cheaper.

Here is an editorial I sent to our newspaper that was published after a Superior Court Judge's Fourth DUI. I received many compliments from readers who knew that judge:

TWO STRIKES AGAINST JUDGE IN DUI CASE

These articles describing the handling of Judge Robert C. Bradley's second drunk-driving arrest in less than a month clearly illustrate what is wrong with both our DUI laws and the application of "Different Laws For Different People." This moron has likely presided over countless cases involving death and mayhem caused by drunk drivers, yet he repeatedly drives drunk and endangers the lives of others. Choosing to drive drunk is not, never was, and never will be a "mistake." It is a crime. It is a deliberate act that can only be made with a total disregard for the lives of others by someone who lacks a conscience. The person who drives drunk is a criminal. The person who kills while driving drunk is a murderer. It doesn't matter whether the drunk driver is a judge, celebrity, doctor, lawyer or a Kennedy.

I was especially amused by Sgt. Steve Carter's statement to The Times that "Judge Bradley didn't get any special treatment here," then the article describes how, after his arrest, Judge Bradley was driven home by police officers. How thoughtful of them! It's nice to know that if I am ever arrested, I will also be chauffeured home by police officers.

Even more asinine was attorney George Eskin's statement that "Drunk driving isn't like stealing or a crime of violence and is not a reflection of Judge Bradley's integrity." Mr. Eskin is absolutely correct. Drunk driving is not like stealing because most thefts do not result in death or serious injury. As for drunk driving not being a reflection of Judge Bradley's integrity, I am surprised that Mr. Eskin would show his own lack of integrity by making such a statement. As for his opinion that drunk driving is not a crime of violence, I am quite certain that if Princess Diana were here, she would adamantly disagree.

That's not necessarily true, that is not true, i don't do that, that is not true, i don't do that, who says, i don't do that, who says, not true🥺
Nice. That reminds me of the AA saying, "denial is not a river in Egypt".
