Woolworth Cheesecake

I love cheesecake and make it occasionally, and aside from cutting the amount of sugar back to roughly 1/3 of what my recipe calls for, I use fresh fruit for the topping (strawberries and bananas), along with fresh whipping cream (of course).

Now I want a slice of cheesecake!

I don't know about you two, Pam and Ruth, but one slice is never good enough for me.

@PamfromTx ,that sounds really good. I wonder if they really served that at Woolworths? We had a Woolworth in town when I was growing up. They really had a wonderful bakery. I remember watching the donuts being fried as they went down a conveyer belt of oil from the 1800's. lol They flipped over halfway through and out came a perfect greasy donut. None better.
@Ruth n Jersey I have to read more about this cheesecake; just saw the recipe and liked it. It seems quite simple to prepare. I'll have to read up more on whether it was served at Woolworth's.

This is a recipe for a cheesecake dessert that was served at the F. W. Woolworth's lunch counters years ago. The first Woolworth store opened in June of 1879 in Lancaster, PA and the last one to close was in Newark, NJ in 1997.

Does Woolworth's still exist anywhere? I have fond memories of the Woolworth's we had downtown. The cheescake looks really good but I won't be making it. I don't remember ever seeing cheescake there.
Well, OneEyed, I don't remember cheese cake, but I do remember Woolworths selection of pies behind the glass case, however, moms pockets were never deep enough for me to enjoy such a thing, as a good day for me as a young child was being treated to a vanilla milkshake served in the stainless tumbler it was made in, and on really good days which were few and far between, mom and I would split a plate of fries.

@OneEyedDiva,I think they are all gone. I read somewhere that they have made a replica of the lunch counter and people who remember the store love to go there. I think I would also.
In high school I spent many an afternoon there with my girlfriends drinking coke and taking pictures in the photo booth.
Once in awhile for a treat my mom and I would have a blt at the lunch counter after shopping. They always added chicken salad to the sandwich which made it so good.

If I made this I would use sugar-free Jello, 1/4 cup sugar, 1/2 cup sugar substitute and a little more lemon juice.

Our Woolworths made great egg salad sandwiches.

I have a photo of my mother with the three of us (sisters and I) walking away from a Woolsworth; we have bags of our purchases. I have posted it here and now I can't find it.

I was reading reviews and most people who have prepared this have said it calls for too much sugar.

I was too young to remember our trips to that store. scan0008.jpg

Found the photo.

Far too much sugar in that recipe.
You'd love my recipe then, Lew.

I find so many recipes nowadays call for a ridiculous amount of sugar. I loathe gaudy sweetness.
As soon as I read the ingredients I thought the same thing but like yourself, I usually cut back on sugar by a lot. Most recipes have too much sugar in them. I liked Woolworth’s though.
