Word of the Day - Ambrosia

Ambrosia (noun) - original meaning was the food of Greek and Roman gods. A more modern definition is a fruit salad composed of whipped cream into which tiny marshmallows, assorted fruits and shredded coconut are incorporated. There's no set recipe and many abound on the Internet.

My aunt usually brings ambrosia to a family get-together.

I love the stuff. Best when there's more whipped cream than fruit. I've only had it when at family get togethers. Trouble is, I have to remember I have to share. Often got into trouble eating too much, and not leaving some for others. But it is just sooooo gooooooood!

My aunt's recipe incorporated cranberries and nuts. She called it "Cranberry Fluff"

2 cups raw cranberries, ground (freezing them beforehand make it easier)
3 cups miniature marshmallows
3/4 cup sugar
2 cups diced apples
1/2 cup green grapes
1/2 cup broken walnuts
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup heavy cream, whipped

Combine cranberries, marshmallows and sugar. Chill overnight. Add apples, nuts and salt. Fold into whipped cream. Chill.

I love Ambrosia but have never made it nor do I have a recipe for it.
Well, Ruthie, I don't have a recipe with real specific measurements, but here is the general outline that can vary depending on the amount you're making:

Equal parts Granny Smith apples and either Gala or Honeycrisp
Mini marshmallows (As many as you might like)
Grapes
Coconut (Again as much as you like)
Equal parts of Cool Whip and sour cream (Just add each till you get the consistency you want)
Maraschino Cherries and also some of the juice for a little color
Mandarin Oranges
Strawberries
Pineapple
Walnuts (If you like)
A little honey for taste

Love ambrosia. My mom used to make it for the holidays. Since she's passed, I've made it a couple of times.
She at times referred to it as 'heavenly hash', her version.
