My cousin recommended a novel to me very passionately, but I found it very banal and still haven't finished the first book of the trilogy 10 years after the purchase.
In Filipino, banal means holy or saintly. It has a negative connotation bordering on hypocrisy among those with a "holier than thou" mentality. Just a trivia on what some words mean in other languages.
