Bulwark (noun) - 1) a solid structure like a wall built for defense. 2) a strong support or protection. 3) the side of a ship above the upper deck.

Like the old hymn says - A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing.

Bulwark in British English means something that protects one from dangerous or unpleasant situations

ie... the children played under the table and built a bulwark around the legs for protection
