Word of the Day - Caduceus

Caduceus (noun) (kuh·DOO·see·us) - a medical insignia bearing a representation of a staff with two entwined snakes and two wings at the top.

A caduceus was prominently displayed in the hospital lobby.

It's a shame the insignia that represents the medical profession is called a caduceus. Caduceus sounds more like a pithy reference to the buttocks or to a person with a low IQ.

We had a person in the lab where I worked that pronounced it "ka-DOO-kus" which sounds even more unappealing.

At An office job I worked at We had a pass around paper where we were to add a line or two to a story. The only stipulation was that we had to use big words that sounded dirty.

I never forgot the opening line of that...

"Mom was mad as hell when she caught me masticating my caduceus in the closet."
