Corpulent (adjective) - having a large bulky body; obese.

In ancient times in many cultures, being corpulent was considered a sign of wealth and health.

I would have been happy to be corpulent in ancient times -- as long as they had ice-cream and eclairs!

Corpulent is just an euphemism for being fat, but it sounds much more polite.
