I have had some dissonance in my life over the things I am told "I should do" and the things I love to do so I have resolved that by just doing what I feel is best for me.

That's for sure. I have a neighbor on chemotherapy every other month and he is still smoking--I guess he can't quit. It baffles me how he can get the chemo and then light up.

When trying to research a topic, if I find too much conflicting information, from what all seem to be reliable sources, then it creates too much cognitive dissonance, for me to find it helpful.
