Gratuitous (adjective) - uncalled for, unnecessary, inappropriate, not justified, unwarranted.

Many parents object to gratuitous violence on TV, in movies and video games.

Wow @debodun I'm glad that you posted this!!

I often stick to the more archaic definitions of words which can be dangerous
because common usage shifts and mutates... but I had realized that this one's
primary usage was now the less flattering one...
