Decades ago, black-and-white TV was perhaps one of the most common and prominent examples of a monochromatic visual,
which seemed surprisingly realistic, even without the true colors.
I remember the monochromatic text only computer monitors from the early 1990s. I ran a used computer store out of a spare bedroom in a house I shared with three other people while I was working on my Bachelor's degree. I made enough to pay my bills, but it cost a lot less to live back then. WordPerfect was the word processing program of choice back then before MS Word took over.
