Moxie is a brand of carbonated beverage that is among the first mass-produced soft drinks in the United States. It was created around 1876 by Augustin Thompson (born in Union, Maine) as a patent medicine called "Moxie Nerve Food"[2]

Moxie is so bitter tasting that you had to have a lot of nerve or courage to drink it. If you had a lot of courage you had a lot of "moxie".

One day out with my father I saw a bottle of Moxie on the shelf in some store, and I asked for it. He kept saying you're not gonna like it and he was right- I didn't like it.

That town still celebrates its famous soft drink, with a Parade/festival, every year, sometime during the summer.
