Needle Drop: When a pre-existing song (rather than original music) plays in a movie or show, either as background music or in-scene music.
Well-known examples of needle drops include Johnny B. Goode in Back to the Future and Day-O in Beetlejuice.

Grey's Anatomy usually features at least one needle drop per episode.

p.s. I came across this phrase in a movie review ("The film had several clever needle drops..."), so I looked up the meaning.
