Sporran (noun) - a pouch worn around the waist so as to hang in front of the kilt as part of men's Scottish Highland dress.

We admired the sporrans at the Highland Games.

As ornamental as the sporran looks, I wonder if there is a practicality for having it .. to provide warmth and prevent the kilt from blowing up on a windy day?

I truly love to see the sway of the kilt. I've always thought I was a reborn Scotsman.

It is actually a purse since there were no pockets in kilts. Gotta keep your pence somewhere.

Reminds me of an old joke - What's that long thing covered with hair that hangs down between a Scotsman's legs?

Kilts do not have pockets, so this means that there’s no place to keep your personal belongings when wearing the kilt
No place for money or food so the necessity for a sporran was born, a sporran is a key feature of traditional Highland
Dress which is made up of leather or fur and is chosen to complement the kilt

It's traditional for Scotsmen to wear nothing underneath a kilt, so the weight of a sporran helps to keep the kilt in place.
