I worked in a Japanese company during my career. One of the expats asked me how I was one morning, and I responded 'FANTASMAGORIC'. Later in the day that same guy came to me with his translation dictionary and asked me to help him look it up.

Another time he asked me, "What is this thing tiiithhe". Finally, I understood he was referring to a church custom of paying tithes. I explained to him what it was and where the belief came from. He once again won the day with his follow up question. "So it is a God tax?" That friendship began in 1989 and exists to this day, although by email and text since he went back to Japan.
