I suppose there will always be a range of views on the thread topic, like much else in life, and not everyone will feel strong minded enough to always take the view you've stated. Paul Newman said something about "if you haven't got enemies you have no character" didn't he too(?).
A very good friend of mine who is no longer with us, having died a couple of years after having had a stroke. She might have recovered from successfully had her partner not suffered from dementia, and failed to listen when she told him she needed to get to hospital as quickly as possible, so he waited for an ambulance which took too long to get her there.
Anyway, she'd been in a caring profession, but also run successful businesses, such as a bar for a couple of years when I first met her. At a party in her house, when most had drunk too much, she came out with the line, "You're mistaking me for someone who gives a damn"!
Now that wasn't Faith at all, and I mention it because I'd guess she was similarly strong minded to your good self, in order to say thr line abive. She bore her illness when wheelchair bound with great fortitude, but she did make mistakes with the men in her life, (she admitted that). Maybe it cost her in the end, as it can anyone perhaps, no matter how strong we might think we are.
