World Down Syndrome Day is marked each year on March 21, beginning in 2007. The 21st day of March was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. The General Assembly of the United Nations has decided to observe it each year since 2012.

We have an 8 year old little girl with 100% Down syndrome in our church. Occasionally, my wife and I will take a turn to watch the child while the parents take a night or weekend off for themselves. We aren’t trained to do a full week while they go on vacation because they do need extra care at times, which we aren’t prepared to do. The little girl will sometimes want to sit with us in church and we are glad to have her. She is like a little baby doll.

I always look forward to having the little girl. I will get down on the floor with her and tickle her. It makes me smile to see her smile and laugh. I like feeding her little snack crackers like the little cheese Goldfish. I have to be careful in case she chokes. My wife and I take her away to an amusement park once a summer where they have kiddie rides. She loves to ride the ponies. Our cat will sometimes sleep with her. She sleeps at the foot of her bed.

She is such a little doll that it always breaks my heart to see her leave, but her parents take outstanding care of her.
