Would you be able to perform an emergency tracheotomy?

What?? I hope everyone knows that this procedure is not just for someone who can't breathe because they have food stuck in their throat. It has to be from an injury caused by an accident and you have to have a straw and a ventilator with you.
TV and the movies have given people the false impression that any idiot can perform this delicate surgery and use something like a pen to close the opened airway with. Scary.

Reality it is most likely if we who are not schooled in medicine attempt it, we're far more likely to kill them than to save them if not immediately then secondarially via infection for shoving a pen or straw in there without being properly sterilized. Also having zero surgical experience, we're likely to be so afraid our hands would be shaking.

In short, no, I still would not - even if my offspring were in dire straits becasue I recognize that I'd be more apt to kill them than to save them.

And for those of you who are saying you would on a stranger even - have you thought about the legal ramifications - especially here it litigious America?

I've learned how to fix a deflated lung, by cutting into the soft part between the ribs and put in a type of tube to let air escape...

For tracheotomy, I've seen it done quite often when my father helped in emergency accidents by the roadside...

I've always been able to do what was absolutely necessary at the time. I would hope if I were in a situation where an emergency surgery had to be done, I could be on the phone with a doctor who would tell me exactly what to do and how. If not, due to fear of litigation, I most likely would not attempt it, of course unless it was one of my loved ones, who would die without it.
