Would you buy a self driving car

Now? No. The technology isn't quite there yet but in time I believe it will be. Have to admit, I am intrigued by the concept. Get in, tell the car where you want to go, sit back and every 15 minutes or so ask, are we there yet? Don...

Oh, Hell, Yeah. Granted the technology may be a little shaky, but I'm a great deal shaky. Plus I've got 4 deer notches on my steering wheel. A self driving car would make my life a lot better. I moved out to the boondocks for the serenity and quietness of a rural area. It costs me $60-80 ONE WAY to go to one of my specialists offices. Please don't tell me about county transportation resources, etc. Yup, there is a free seniors' bus. I just have to hike the six miles to the nearest bus stop. So yeah, a self driving car looks great.

I'm counting on it. I plan on giving up the helm by the time I'm 80, so in 7 or 8 years they better be ready.

No way. The day I can boot up my computer in under a half-minute, use it while experiencing the smooth, confident flow of a perfectly tuned piece of high tech ware, have it flawlessly communicate with everything that's attached to it, and go a year without needing updates that bog it down, I'll consider a self-driving car. If my desktop doesn't run smoothly, 100% of the time, there's absolutely no way anyone will convince me to trust my life to an imperfectly built and programmed automobile.

Noooooo! Besides which, I drive standard and it’s wsy too much fun to give up. It’s a sports car. I’d be bored silly with a self driven car. :yawning:

As a geezer, I fear the time when I might no longer be able to drive. That situation would make driverless cars much more attractive. I am not ready yet and the technology has a long way to go. I still have another 16 years before I reach age 100.

Self driving cars will probably be the norm in another couple of decades. However, during the "transition" when these cars are competing for space on the roadways with human driven cars, I suspect the numbers of accidents will rise substantially. Plus, if these things are driven under the control of satellite/computer control, I can just imagine the havoc that will occur when, not if, their program is "hacked".

No. I don't have faith in technology. Can u image getting into the car and say you want to go to the local supermarket and the car gets hacked and you land up being driven two counties over?! I'll pass.

Yup!

At this point, I would want one with dual controls or an autopilot option.

I think that cruise control on steroids would be great for long trips on the major toll roads even if the kinks of city driving still need to be worked out.

Yes, if they were tested and true with no incidents or accidents...I hate driving especially to my daughter’s which is about a 3 hr drive one way.

Id go more often if I didn’t have to drive.

A chauffeur would work also. :)

I agree with everybody else on this: no way, certainly not now.

However, my own car, bought last year, has many safety features that make it practically self-driving, such as the fact that it will stop automatically if I am about to run into something.
