Would You Give Out Your Phone # In This Case?

Just curious....got a request from out park office asking for permission to give our phone number out to a volunteer who will call if there is an emergency.

In the little over a year the water has gone off twice due to a water main break....not an emergency in my opinion. I know when the water goes off, I turn on the tap and nothing comes out.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the "volunteer" is the neighborhood sneak, snoop, whatever you want to call her that is in cahoots with the park manager and walks around with her and a clipboard to make notes on who should get a letter for minor infractions.

My cell phone number is only given out to people I trust.

What about you?

I would be cautious about how I gave my phone number to IF it is unlisted. That said, it seems as if it is on everybody's list that is trying to sell something already.

I would nope out on it...unless it becomes mandated by terms of lease or something. With so many people having email. I am with you something obvious like broken water main, . is noticable. I am wondering the reasoning behind this

You're probably right.

I would tell my manager that I already have an emergency contact and they've been given instructions. The management here is sort of in-your-face too. I'm courteous with them, but I keep my distance and protect my privacy.

My phone number is only given out to close friends and the dentist/doctor etc. If anyone else wants to contact me they can; ring the doorbell, send a letter or try to get through on the land line/fight the scammers fo a place in line.
Anyone that is not on my contacts list gets blocked.

I've had to submit my number to the managing agent and board of our co-op but it's all official, I've been to the office and given my number once. They just sent a form around for updated information. They use an automated system to call when work needs to be done that will affect our building. I know it's legit, so no problem. In your case, you don't know who's really getting your number and the why seems suspicious....so no, if I were you I wouldn't give it out.

I had to give my number also when I bought my unit. After that I have not been asked for my number. I have the cell number of the maintenance man I can call if the office does not answer. They are on call 24/7 but I only call during office hours and the office manager is not there. I would not call them after hours. The office does have an answering service I can leave a message with if necessary. I would not give my number out to any other person here at the complex unless its a friend.

No. A "volunteer' does not need to know your number if there's an "emergency". If there is an emergency, the "volunteer" can "volunteer" to tell the park office so they may do all the calling.

Many many years ago I got so tired of rude wrong numbers that I just let every single call go to the answering machine. Notified everyone who knows me to just start talking and I'll pick up. Works like a charm. That, of course is with the landline. As for cell calls I'll answer or call back anyone I want to speak with and the rest get ignored and blocked. Wheeeeeee.....

A volunteer - that’s highly questionable. I’d ask them who the volunteer is and what they consider an emergency.

There could be situations were you need to evacuate the area. If so, then it should be handled by the office, not a volunteer.

Probably have well over 100 contacts in my cell phone... all who have my cell number. When working, other associates in the firm had to have it. Contractors and suppliers had to have it. Since retiring, I'm in my 4th years on the Board of Directors as our golf course. Present and past BOD members have it. Staff at the golf course has it. Add to that kids and grandkids... Geezer golf group... Doctor offices... The list is too long to worry about.

I'm not sure how it works in Canada but I believe that the United States federal law prohibits a for-profit company from using volunteers.

I would opt out of it until I had a better understanding of how it is going to work and who would have access to my information.

This is interesting as the park I am in is in Canada but owned by an American firm.

Most of the neighbors are against this idea as the volunteer is not someone who is liked, and constantly in cahoots with the manager.

This manager has to go, numerous reports have been made to her boss but he is unable to act on them due to the border crossing restrictions.

I am just going to ignore the form as are the neighbors.
