Would you have helped these people at the petrol station?

The time was 4.15am, filling up car with petrol, another car at another pump, 4 people inside, owner asks me if I have any jumper leads as their battery was flat.
"No, I do not own jumper leads"
"Can you take your battery out and put it in my car so I can start the car"?
"No, sorry bloke, I will be late for work"

Thing is, if you put your battery in their car, they can start the car and drive off. Then what? Do you chase them on foot?

They can spend their own money getting their own battery.

Good you were smart enough to avoid a problem.

My first thought was, they drive away with my battery and I would be really late for work.
Not that naive these days

I have zero faith in many mostly because of things like this.
Ask a ok question regarding a jump but the whole put your battery in my car is way over the top..... i cant fathom who falls for this but i am sure some do.
I am sure there would be people that would have done as asked.
I have been around to long now to even contemplate such a thing.

I have a policy that when approached and i politely decline if they continue trying to haggle a handout i definitely walk away or leave asap
Most who truly need a hand are happy with whatever is offered or understand some have nothing to spare.

This has become a bigger issue .... I had a person follow me into a store after i told them i could not help in the parking lot ........... walking closer and closer trying to spew a sad tale until i finally had to be super loud and rude to say Back off ... find another patsy.

They seemed shocked by my loudness alerted everyone (Manager came over) that this is a scam they moved along to the next shopping area to target others.

What good would it do to start their car with your battery? Obviously, their car would need to be turned off when you put the battery back in your car, at which time their car would be dead again.

It doesn't make any sense, but hey, a lot of things don't make any sense in this world. :ROFLMAO:

Unbelievable that they would ask for something like this.

I've always had jumper cables in my vehicle, and over the years I have helped people out with a boost while on the way to work in the dark morning. I would never put my battery into their car, that sounds nutty.

Now that I'm older, my husband made me promise not to pick up any hitchhikers like I used to, or help anyone in the dark or in a place where there are no other people around. I gladly promised, it's the smart thing to do. My first tendency is to help, but I'm older and wiser now, a woman in her late 60s can be easily overcome if not careful.

Good for you to tell somebody like that to back off, I'd have no problem doing that. If I decide to give someone money, it will be voluntary, they can't demand I do it.

One really good thing about aging, wisdom tends to play a large part in our decision making.

No, their alternator would keep their car going for a while, but it would take a while to charge up the alternator, and what if the problem was a bad alternator? Also, the other driver had no jump cables but had tools to remove the OPs battery? That's sus.

To be honest it would depend on what kind of neighborhood we were in and whether the other person was alone. I would def not loan my battery in my neighborhood, and not if it was a couple of big grungy looking dudes.

By using your battery, they could charge their alternator well enough to get them home or whatever, and you wouldn't have to install your battery all the way, just hook it up but not lock it in.

Now that I think about it, you're right. Our Accord had a bad battery but it ran after it was jumped but wouldn't start again after it was turned off. So, yeah, I guess it could have been a legitimate request.

Time is an issue.
First step is to test the battery because that may not be the problem.

Then it takes a huge chunk of time to...
Un-install your battery...
In-stall it into their car...
Un-install it...
Re-install it back into your car...
A total of at least 2 hours and might not be properly reinstalled.
