Would You Let Your Cat Get Two Vaccines At Once?

Deja is due for her rabies vaccine today and and I was asked if I also wanna her to get the distemper shot at the same time. When she was a kitten I chose to pay for another office visit rather than to have her get 2 shots at the same time.

I'm still a bit leery about it but I will ask the doctor about the possible side effects, how safe is it and how often he's given two at once with other cats. I will see what my son thinks too.

I've lost two precious dogs in late 90s due to over vaccinations for rabies. They both died within a month of their enforced quarantine about a week apart.

They were gentle girls, our wee Pomeranian suffered from bladder problems. I tried to send her medication by mail. It was refused and returned, I couldn't understand why.

Did hire an investigator and discovered what had happened. It was heartbreaking.

So no to vaccinations...

I hope she will be OK. Since I had to switch vets I haven't taken my tabby in. My calico has been in because she has inflmatory bowel disease and needs monitoring and medication.

Last time my tabby had a rabies vaccine she got sick. Throwing up mucus repeatedly. She was back at the vet 2 days later. She was given subcutaneous fluids and a nausea shot. That turned her around. But they insist on rabies even for indoor cats. Because you know that rabid bat is going to fly into my place and go for the cat, not me. But I'm really hesitant to have her get the shot again. Perhaps they can give the anti nausea shot as a preventative. Calico does fine.

Like you, I wondered why a rabies shot was needed for an indoor cat, but it's the law here in Jersey. If I ever need to board her they'll need proof of the rabies vaccine. We may just need to do that when we go to our family reunion down south in two years. Perhaps even before then.
She did okay with the first shot a year ago....she was just lethargic that night.

I'm sorry your cat has those health issues. One of my first cats was a calico cat. He used to jump on my bed the same time every morning to wake me up for school. 😺 It's funny you mention bats. One got on our patio one time. Without my glasses, I saw this black think flopping around on my patio and I thought it was a piece of carbon paper. Then I put on my glasses! 🦇 Glad I didn't decide to open the patio door and go out there to pick it up!

I think in California the law is dogs, not cats? But the vets are pretty insistent. If there was a rabid bat in here, I'd be the first and much bigger target for them to go after.

I'm just going to have to bite it and get my tabby in.

I wound up going with just one shot. That's what my "first mind" was telling me. My son agreed and reiterated that we should always follow our first minds. The doctor is pleased with how she's coming along, except he said she's a pound over where he'd like her to be. She is 11 pounds now and he said ideally, since she's a smaller cat, she should be about 9 or 10 pounds. He'd like me to cut back just a little more on her portions. Actually, she's done that herself over the past couple of months. So taking off just a teeny bit more probably won't matter.

@Remy & @Supernatural. My BFF has a good friend who has dogs that happen to go to the same vet that we do. But I think his pets may have been seen by the father, not the son who takes care of Deja. One of his dogs got very sick when he was given two vaccines at once.

Not sure about cats but there’s no difference in the amount of medication in a rabies vaccine for dogs that is marked 3 years or one year. Only the label is different so I always get the 3 year. In Nevada if your vet doesn’t think a pet should get it because of age or illness they can fill out a waiver form and list the reasons.

"In Nevada if your vet doesn’t think a pet should get it because of age or illness they can fill out a waiver form and list the reasons." Well it's good that they have that option. Deja won't need another rabies vaccine for three years but the distemper has to be given each year. She is strictly an indoor cat, but she still has to get those vaccines.
