Would you make a contribution to a local organization....

I haven’t seen any of that in years. I donate to kids’ organizations, my high school’s Booster club, local kids’ athletic programs, etc.

We also donate to a few national charities like St. Jude’s and a few others.

What I don’t donate to is when the store wants to keep my change leftover from my purchase, and people holding cans at the street corners. I do donate to the fireman’s fill the boot program.

I have no door to door worries here, does not happen. When we lived in Texas in apartments, I created a sign years ago after some guy knocked on our door after dark selling something:

BY ORDER OF SMITH AND WESSON
NO SOLICITATION OF ANY KIND

I had to re assure the pizza guy this di not include him...works like a charm

Thanks for the uninformed stupid comment! Do you know any organization that does not have employees who run the organization who get paid? The answer is NO! And if you knew anything at all about businesses, you would know that CEO's and Presidents of large organizations do get paid very well, based on their experience, knowledge and ability to lead. Without leadership you have NOTHING! Or did you not know that?

Stop criticizing something that you obviously know NOTHING about...!
I guess you must be a real smarty pants that knows everything about everything. What I am saying is these CEO should be making a lot less and more money to the needy. Maybe you are a CEO that wants it all (GREEDY). Sorry I pissed in your Cheerios. Have a great day.

The group I mentioned is not a charity per se, actually a local government service, but they do this every year in early October as far back as I can remember. I know this, so when my doorbell rings this time of year, I just don't answer. It is a group that is already supported by local taxes. I just wonder why they need the extra money. My mom use to say it was to pay for their 'unofficial' activities.

I disagree. A lot of them are overpaid. Take a look at the history of CEO salaries vs. what the workers are paid.

Why so mysterious? 🤔

We get kids sometimes, "Would you donate to my group of mean girl cheerleaders so we can take a trip?' I usually give them a little. Who can turn down kids? I, too, get tired of the "Would you like to round it up?" bit at the register, but I usually say okay to that, too.

One time, after I had already given at the store earlier that day, the young man at the register asked me if I would like to give to the March of Dimes and I said a flat, "No.". He got all huffy and said "Don't you care about the babies?"

He got a long earful he wasn't expecting about the annual March of Dimes drive verses the small amount of good they've actually done since their start with polio and why didn't his store ever collect for anything else and how does he know how much money I give each year to my favorite charity which is highly rated on Charity Navigator and works for a cure for schizophrenia the Number One Disabler of young people and the leading cause of homelessness -- "Don't you care about the homeless?" Poor embarrassed kid.

Some good ones:
  • Christian Blind Mission International (100%)
  • Direct Relief (100%)
  • Heart to Heart International (100%)
  • Midwest Food Bank (100%)
  • Feeding America (99%)
  • Good360 (99%)
  • Houston Food Bank (99%)
  • Matthew 25: Ministries (99%)

That was going around ringing doorbells for donations, but when you asked them for help in the past, refused.
Since you know the LOCAL organization & what they provide for the community & we the members on SF don't. Maybe if you described your need in the past that was refused more reasoned replies would be posted.

Not likely there will be a reply to this, I'm pretty sure Deb has me on ignore.

Just this past Saturday morning, got an unexpected doorbell ring.
Could see an elementary aged kid was selling something.
On the porch, I looked to find his mom in a car at the curb.
I waved ... she waved.
Asked the kid how much the chocolate bars were.
When he said, "A dollar", I said, "I'll take twenty".
Absolutely no idea why he was selling chocolate bars ... but CHOCOLATE !!!
I returned to the porch after fetching my twenty, to find the kid gleefully counting them out.
His mother watched from the car at the curb and thanked me.
I waved ... she waved.

Long after they'd gone and curious about the number of chocolate bars on the kitchen counter ...
I found the kid had counted out twenty-one instead of the twenty I purchased.

I have cheated a kid out of a chocolate bar and that gives me a sad :(

how funny is that picture. I am literally sitting here eating one of those candy bars right now. They were on the counter at my chiropractor’s office so I bought two.

Isn’t it amazing how they have shrunk in size since our kids were little and selling them. The two that I bought were 1 ounce and 1.1 ounce. still a dollar however.
