Would you rather have a short intense or a long milder illness?

Of course none of us wants to be ill and I wish everyone the best health they can have.

I'm going into my fifth week of a cold/RSV infection and I'm getting so damned tired of it. I'm realizing I would have much rather had a short intense illness up for up to four days rather than this. This is the longest I have ever been ill. I've had some illness which lasted up to 2 weeks and some where I was sick for a week had three healthy days followed by another week of sickness. But nothing ever like this. There were three days when I was feeling like I was starting to get health but it call came crashing down on the fourth day.

As a child , I almost died from rheumatic fever. It was a long and grueling recovery. Mom had to teach me how to walk again, since there was no money for physical therapy. She also tutored me so I wouldn’t fail first grade. I have never forgotten that.

I have had short bouts of bronchial issues and food poisoning— I will take those over extended illness any day. Especially now that I am old. Extended illnesses aren’t good for anyone, especially the elderly.

Sounds like you had an amazing mom.

Maybe you should go to the doctor and get a prescription for some antibiotics. Sometimes our bodies need a little help getting better.

That sounds so miserable. I hope you get better soon.

Short and intense is my preference. I can always take NyQuil so I can sleep at night.

Long illnesses make me crazy. It starts to feel like I will always be sick with a bad cold.

I never got any illnesses for long time despite of my advanced age. No illnesses for the past 15 years. But, I fractured the heel(2 places) of my right foot. I spent a little more than 3 months, wheelchair and other walking assistances. Now, I can walk, but seems more time to able to walk as normally as prior to the injury, both inside and outside. It might be much, much better if I got a bad-flu rather the broken foot. But, I accept the reality, my age started catching-up which I starting losing 'good balance. I need to be more careful and slow-down all around me.

An update for those who might be following. I feel the best I have in a couple of weeks. I'm still a bit worn down but the RSV/cold symptoms have been reduced quite a bit. I saw the doctor yesterday and she gave me antibiotics because I had signs of a sinus infection. I also got a different inhaler and that has almost completely eliminated my wheezing. So I've got a fairly major positive improvement. I'm still taking it easy because I don't want to get sick again.

How did you fracture your heel? I've always been a fast mover, walker, turner, twister, grabber, reacher, etc. 😄 Just a swift person. Now at 68, I try to be aware and move slower, do full turns rather than twisting, etc.

I know that as we age, it's easier to break and sprain things. I noticed my joints creak more when I move certain ways. Just today, I was zipping around my apartment doing things. As I turned towards the closet in the bedroom, I felt a little pain somewhere in my ankle or foot.

Noticed I was twisting quickly, pivoting. I immediately stopped and turned full on. Heavy-handed people do everything so heavily and quickly. It was ok when I was 38.
