How would you like to parachute out of the gondola? In 1960, Col. Joe Kittinger floated up to more than 18 1/2 miles above the surface of the earth in an open-air gondola (no fancy pressurized pod for our Orlando boy), wearing a pressure suit duct-taped together.

Then he jumped out of the gondola and free-fell with only a drogue-chute for stabilization for 4 1/2 minutes at speeds up to 614 mpg before opening his main chute at 18,000 feet.

That was only one of his daring exploits. Whatta guy! They don't make them like that any more.
