Would you sleep with your door unlocked at night.

I'm curious about your area, Old Salt. I'm not asking for exact location but could you say generally what country, state, city, rural, small town?
I lived in Nova Scotia (in cities and rural areas) for most of my life and moved to New Brunswick after my wife died to be close to my daughter! I now live in a French speaking (Acadian) area and they are hard working, decent and friendly people! Very little crime! In all honesty, Halifax, N.S. did have its problems, but only in certain areas! If you didn't live there you could feel safe!

Thanks. That explains why you are unaware of the crime problem in the US and other places. I would love to visit Nova Scotia someday but I have probably put that off too long.

What you describe as certain areas with crime and safety everywhere else is the way it used to be in most of the US. Things have changed dramatically here in the last few years. I live in a large city, but definitely not nearly the size of Chicago, San Francisco or NYC. It used to be low crime and it still is compared to those cities, but we have lost police and seen crime rise in the last few years. Small towns and rural areas are the best places now, IMO.

Well, in all honesty, I haven't kept up with the crime rate in our major cities. It could very well be that Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver might be seeing increased crime as well! Thank God for smaller towns and cities! Thank God that I don't have to worry if I locked my door or not!

I'm glad you don't have to worry about that. It should be that way everywhere and would be if the police were funded and the justice system worked.

I grew up in small towns and prefer living in an area with a large, diverse population.

It's second nature to me to lock up and set the alarm. DH & I pay attention to advice given by local and non-local law enforcement.
Beyond that, we live our lives similarly to most. I don't feel particularly endangered - taking precautions helps me feel safer not more vulnerable.

Bad things can happen anywhere at anytime to anyone. Locks aren't meant to be decorations.
