Wow! It Really Works! Easy Way To Peel a Hard Boiled Egg

My son just did this. We had seen the same video about how to easily peel a hard boiled egg. I commented that in the video I saw, the girl says "No way!" As he was peeling it he said "Way!" The shell came right off in basically two pieces...no mess, no fuss, no little pieces left on the egg! What's the trick? Just put the egg in a glass and shake it a few of times. Voila! This video shows a similar concept except like in the video we saw, my son used a full sized glass that did not contain water and his shell didn't come off in the glass.

Mixed results here because I just tried it. :giggle: I boiled 3 eggs for our breakfast tomorrow. All from the same carton. First one after shaking about 20 seconds was fairly easy to peel and part of it slid right off, but not really "exciting." Second egg in a new inch of water... shook 20 seconds and I swear the ENTIRE shell slid off right like in this video. Third one was done same way and wasn't very easy to peel at all.

Strange... made me wonder how many times the guy in the video had to try it to get his results? In any case, I'm amazed at the second egg! (Guess I'm easily amused! 🤭) I used a smaller size coffee cup with an inch of water.... had to make sure my hand would fit over the top.

The only rule of thumb at my house is that if the egg is going to be turned into a deviled egg and taken to a party at someone else's house, the shell will come off unevenly, leaving the egg to look like it had suffered from smallpox.

If I'm boiling eggs to make egg salad, the shelled eggs are works of art, worthy of being displayed at the Met. I've tried lying to the eggs, but they know what you're going to do with them and make every effort to sabotage you.

Yes, fresh eggs are harder to peel. If you're making devilled eggs, make sure your eggs are at least a few days old.

Wow, that technique would have been very useful to younger me. Now I just buy the package of hardboiled eggs at the store, they are sold already peeled.

I don't believe anymore about new eggs being hard to peel and old eggs easy, because when we had chickens all the eggs were brand new, and some were hard and some were easy. I suspect there is a component of who (which hen) laid the egg. Maybe some have genes that make slipperier membranes under the shells.

Yeah, I think it's all about the membrane. My grampa told me (years ago) that it had to do with what he fed the chickens.

I boil eggs for salads of all kinds and deviled eggs. I have found that a little older egg does work better. I put the eggs in cold water to cover, bring it to a boil, turn off the heat and let them set for 10 minutes. Drain off hot/warm water, add cold water, wait a minute, drain of cold water. Then I just shake them a round the pan to get the shells cracked all over. I then peel, starting with the large end of the egg. There is an air pocket there and makes it easy to break the membrane inside the egg. Works very good for me. If does fail if the eggs are still to fresh.

I was on another site half an hour ago and posted this.

How do you boil your eggs?
My method
Put eggs in a small saucepan, cover with water, bring to boil.
Remove from heat. Leave for 8 minutes. Discard water
Cover eggs with chilled water for 4 minutes. This allows for easy peeling of eggs.

Then, for sandwiches I peel eggs, add butter, cheese, cracked black pepper, curry power if wanted.
Mash with potato masher to consistency required.

Fun video... but I just roll the hard boiled egg back and forth on the bread board or the counter, and the shell comes right off..(y)
Maybe I'll try that HD because after doing the shake the egg thing, the shell came off in even smaller pieces! I guess I shook a little too hard. :DI've always had trouble peeling egg shells off @Pepper.
