This is disgusting to me. It's bad enough that Ethan Couch only got probation at his initial sentencing due to his attorney using what has been termed the Affluenza defense (he was too privileged to know right from wrong) but was locked up for only two years after violating that probation by fleeing the country and is now being released. Where is the justice for those people who lost family and friends? That boy was highly intoxicated and this article details the horrific accounts from that night. IMHO he should have remained behind bars for decades.

If a person has enough money to hire the best of lawyers, they can get away with almost anything. DUI is one of the most 'under punished" violations of the law, and accounts for thousands of deaths/serious injuries every year. However, in order to punish these drunks properly, we would need much stronger laws. That is unlikely to happen, as many of our politicians are themselves borderline alcoholics, and loathe to create any laws that might come back to bite them.

This story is three years old!

Interesting story. I have no knowledge of Texas law, but it sounds to me that he (Couch) opted for trial by Judge and not by jury. At least it sounds that way. I have not heard of that type of defense (Afluenza)

I will comment by saying over my carrer of investigating many vehicle accidents, I have been in court more times than I care to mention. I have heard some very tearful excuses and seen some defendants showing no remorse.

In this case, as for the judge, if he is an elected judge, I would hope that the citizens in his district took note and did not re-elect him. IMO, the judge was nothing more than the kid’s enabler, as well as his parents. It’s obvious this kid feels a sense of entitlement.

He needed to spend some time in prison and while in there, I am sure that he would learn the meaning of the word NO!

Below it shows you can get two years for killing an animal like this guy got for killing four people!!

"For cruelty convictions involving depriving an animal of food or water, abandoning an animal, transporting an animal in a cruel manner, injuring someone else’s animal, and overworking an animal, the defendant will be punished with a Class A misdemeanor, which may include a fine up to $4,000, jail time up to a year, or both. If the conviction is a third offense involving these actions, the state may punish the defendant with a state jail felony. Under Texas law, a state jail felony may include jail time ranging from 180 days to 2 years and a fine up to $10,000."

The kid's lawyer made the following statements to ABC News: "..... his lawyers, Scott Brown and Reagan Wynn, said in a statement to ABC News. "From the beginning, Ethan has admitted his conduct, accepted responsibility for his actions, and felt true remorse for the terrible consequences of those actions."

I have heard similar comments before from criminal defense attorneys on behalf of their clients. IMO, they never really meant much to me. If the kid would have made those comments, it would have meant a lot more, but it's my opinion that these comments were made up by the lawyers in a weak attempt to appease the public.

The link is 3 years old but the killer driver's release from jail is not. Here is a current link on their release.

My thing is that many legal and social worker types try to turn offenders into victims themselves. They probably think that way because they know or realize how many drive drunk without incident-yet.

Thank you for posting this link WhatInThe. I should have posted it in the original thread so AZ Jim would not have been confused about the reason for this thread. LOL
