Wrist Injury

I hurt or sprained my wrist going on 10 wks ago and it's still hurting, burning a lot.

I didn't see a dr. or get an xray due to covid and fear of contracting it at the clinic. Instead I put ice on it and lately did youtube videos by a physical therapist. The pain increase so much I cut down on them as the youtube pt said to. The pain still is horrible.

I talked to someone today that said I could have pinched a nerve in my wrist. I never realized that could happen in the wrist.

So I am thinking of making an orthopedic appointment instead of going to ER to avoid some who may be there with the virus.

Anyone else relate?

Ruthanne, I'm sorry to hear about your wrist. I think you are making the right choice about not going to the ER. Besides the doctors in the ER may suggest you see a specialist anyway.
That would be two trips instead of just one.
I hope it feels better soon and you get some answers.
Thanks Ruth, it's a real pain..to say the least, with it being the hand I use. I try not to use it as much but then it gets stiff. Doesn't help I have arthritis in it, too.

Where does it hurt? Top of wrist, on the side, underside of wrist? Top is likely a sprain. Side is probably tendonitis. Underside could be carpal tunnel. Try soaking in Epsom Salts or at least make a compress and wrap around your wrist for a while. I swear by Epsom Salts to "draw out" inflammation that is causing the pain.

I twisted it while in bed. It's on the inside and goes from the wrist up into my thumb. I cannot put salts on--because of my liver. No salt! Ice helps but pain comes back all the time and just won't heal up. But thanks so much for trying to help. 🌹

Could be dequervain's tendinosis, resulting from the twist injury. Treatment is splinting (to allow wrist to "rest"), compression, and hot-and-old therapy (5 minutes of heat, 10 minutes of cold).
Thank you. I'm going to see an Orthopedic doctor. They will take xrays and determine. I cannot allow the wrist to rest because it is my dominant hand...I have to use it at times..I do some compression for 30 minutes to an hour..that's all I can stand till it becomes too painful..but I do try not to do the movements that cause stabbing pains. I tried heat on it and it makes me go through the roof with pain..so I keep using the ice. Thanks again..I appreciate it...this wrist is a royal PITA.

@jujube I was able to tolerate a very warm washcloth on my hand and wrist and it felt pretty good so I'm going to try doing what you said with the hot and cold even though it's not going to be hot it's going to be very warm but very cold too. Thanks.

Go to the ER first! When I went last week the first thing they did was put a mask on me and do a swab test. It was negative so I was allowed to continue. Saw a surgeon there, surgery that afternoon and home thereafter. Will follow up in the next 10 days at his office.

Not going to the ER. If I go at all I will go to the Orthopedic doctor. Less chance of contracting something in there. Thanks for your message terry.

I have arthritis in my left thumb and it sounds a lot what you are saying. My doctor gave me a wrist, thumb support which I wear when the pain becomes overbearing. Hope you find out soon Ruthanne.
Yes, there is arthritis in my hands but this was also something I did to it when sleeping, twisted it, I have been wearing the compression "glove" some, as much as I can tolerate it as after about an hour it starts to hurt. Thank you for your message.

I avoid ER's like the plague, pun intended. They are cesspools of germs!

She did the right thing making an appointment with the specialist: Far less of a chance to contract some nasty infection from a fellow patient.
I didn't make an appointment yet, still seeing if I can do this on my own. As of today seems to be hurting a little less..I think when we are older it takes longer to mend. What with having arthritis and less muscle mass and all that good stuff that goes along with aging.

Yes, arthritis pain can be so intense at times! I sometimes take a little Ibuprofen but don't want to take it continually as it's not good for the liver.

Dear @Ruthanne I wonder if it could be Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Best to find out what the problem is and work out a treatment regime
I have so many joint problems I really do feel (pardon the pun) for you and
understand how debilitating this nagging pain can be šŸ¤—
Thank you for your reply to this thread. And for your empathy.

Yes @Ruthanne I did read it. I broke my left wrist many years ago and now as I age it lets me know
I also have ganglions on both wrists due to a lifetime of manual labour so I can understand your pain
Thank you. It is hard to have pain quite a lot isn't it. I think now it may be tendonitis. I'm applying heat then ice. It seems to be getting a little better. Not sure yet if I'll see a doctor at this point. I have other things I have to take care of at the clinic this month.

So I'm cautiously taking one thing at a time with this virus worry still looming. Thanks again.

Sound to me like it very well might be carpal tunnel. I've had it off and on for years. Comes from using computers and mouse.
What's the plural of computer mouse, anyway? Computer mice, or computer mouses???

Docs had me wear a wrist brace. It didn't really fix it, so I considered surgery, but I was put off by the risks and posssible negative outcomes. Now it comes along and stays for a while and then goes away or lessens and then months later it is back again.
