The painted bunting is one of the most rapidly declining songbirds in the eastern United States. Florida breeding and winter season surveys show an astounding 4-6 percent annual decrease in this species' numbers. In some areas, counts have fallen from the hundreds to a mere handful.

Those rarities are like the white squirrels. Brevard, NC, has them as their "signature critters" and has a white squirrel festival every year. I've not had the luck to see one in the wild, though.
Here in Canada we have the occasional "White Moose " . They are rarely seen. For our European members....A mature male Moose is bigger than a Clydesdale shire horse, and their antlers can grow to be 2 meters across, and weigh over 40 kilos.

Moose are vegetarians, who browse on plants, tree branches, and grasses. They like to be close to water bodies, either lakes or ponds, and in the heat of summer, they spend hours in water up to their neck, to get relief from deer flies, and mosquitoes. During the winter they spend less time moving around their range, to conserve energy.

Moose/Automobile collisions in Canada can be serious in terms of human injuries. About 80 percent of Moose who are hit by a vehicle die at the scene, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police annual report. JIMB>
