Yemen's Houthi rebels hijack Israeli-linked ship in the Red Sea, take crew hostage

JERUSALEM (AP) — Yemen’s Houthi rebels seized an Israeli-linked cargo ship in a crucial Red Sea shipping route on Sunday, officials said, taking over two dozen crew members hostage and raising fears that regional tensions heightened over the Israel-Hamas war were playing out on a new maritime front.

Perhaps the western nations should organize convoys with naval warship escorts to pass through the danger zones ? Moving 2 dozen merchant ships in a convoy with some warships and armed helicopters over head would be a way to avoid the rag tag rabble that are the Houthi rebels. It worked during WW2. JimB.

"On Monday, Japan’s top government spokesperson confirmed the capture of the Nippon Yusen-operated ship, Galaxy Leader, according to Reuters. Tokyo is now appealing with the Houthis for the release of the vessel and seeking the help of Saudi, Omani and Iranian authorities."
The ship is owned by a corporation located in the U.K. founded by one of Israel's richest men, Abraham Ungar, and operated by a Japanese ship operating company.

Yes, that sounds like a solution.

A Google search indicates a Royal Navy destroyer costs $280,000 to $350,000 Per Hour to operate. I assume there could be smaller vessels that could do the job but I suspect the cost would still be enormous. Which country in this case would be willing to shell out that amount of money to escort cargo ships? I think none. I also doubt ship lines would be willing to foot the bill.

Wasn't there an ocean liner hijacked in the 1980s after Beirut stirred up. I think they killed/tossed a disabled senior overboard.
This is why one should not negotiate with terrorists and why their bases of operation be destroyed. It's going to continue through the end of the year and then some.

Achille Lauro hijacking

Hijacking took place on 7 October 1985
The Achille Lauro hijacking took place on 7 October 1985, when the Italian ocean liner MS Achille Lauro was hijacked by four men representing the Palestine Liberation Front off the coast of Egypt, as she was sailing from Alexandria to Ashdod, Israel. A 69-year-old Jewish American man in a wheelchair, Leon Klinghoffer, was murdered by the hijackers and thrown overboard. The hijacking sparked the "Sigonella Crisis". Wikipedia

That's it. I wasn't sure.

Sadly they'll be back to hijacking airliners some how. They want attention if nothing else.

How about allowing the ships to protect themselves by any means necessary against such threats? I see no problem with the crews protecting themselves & being allowed to do so. Just my thoughts.

It may give some in the international community heartburn. But if it was their a$$es or family on those ships, they would change their opinions real dam fast.

Private military contractors providing services in high risk areas (i.e. Somolia) may be a more cost efficient option.

READ THIS> The R.N has been patrolling in the Red Sea, protecting international shipping for at least 2 years now.

It took me about ten seconds to find that news article. In addition, the USA, Canada, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium and other European nations also have war ships operating there. Forming protected merchant ship convoys should not be a problem. JimB.
