Yet another trade agreement in the works. This one is called the TransAtlantic Trade Investment Partnership or TTIP. Even the French not thrilled with this one. Big Pharma again one of the major lobby groups on this already having 122 closed door meetings with trade officials.

Canadian Company To Sue Romania

Here is an example of what could happen under the TTIP where a company can sue a country under the arbitration clauses in some of the treaties. A Canadian company wants to sue the country of Romania because they don't want a huge mining operation in their country at the site in question.

A Gabriel Resources wants to sue Romania in a World Bank court or tribunal because Romania doesn't a want a project that will basically destroy a mountain and two villages. The deal has been in the works for 10 years but the Romanian government/parliament won't give the final authorization.

Point is treaties like the TTIP, TPP or TISA make lawsuits like this more likely and will probably favor the companies and not the people/local governments.
 
Big fear from Europe is that they will surrender sovereignty to the US on any domestic law involving trade. If can affect trade they must be consulted. Probably works the other way to. Yes giving up sovereignty is a huge if not the biggest defect in these comprehensive trade treaties.

I think Canada has likewise been sued half a dozen times by other countries too. If anything, lawyers must be loving these trade deals.

Very few European countries not in the EU, and even fewer important ones.

Switzerland, Norway, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, Macedonia, Ukraine, Moldova, Iceland, Belarus and Turkey

Norway and Iceland are important, Switzerland likes to maintain neutrality, Ukraine and Turkey are too unstable and I don't think the others have much influence on world trade.
