You witnessed a big robbery

This is a follow up to Apple's moneybag thread. If you witnessed a big robbery and you recognized the robbers......and they are VICIOUS.........either people you knew personally or mob members who are well known, would you turn them in? Or would you be too nervous to be involved as you wouldn't want to be looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life due to retaliation.

Call the FBI, convince them you can identify the crooks, but only if they release some of the funds they are budgeted for, the purpose being paying "informers". It was said back in the '90s that budget was on the order of $150 MILLION per year. Talk about buying information. I find it hard to believe to this day. imp

Is this a serious thread, or should we play it for laughs?

Edited - I see now that this is in General Discussions which are meant to be light hearted.
So, pass the

How to take that, Red. Laugh at me, or the FBI, or interpret as "Lots Of Luck? ;) imp

I'd try to see if there was a way I could turn them in anonymously. I certainly would not depend on the FBI or any government agency to protect myself or my family from retaliation.

Good thinking! Don't believe in witness protection? But if you cannot depend on a major Law Enforcement Agency, or "any government agency", to protect you, who COULD you depend on? imp

No, I don't believe in Witness Protection. Even if I did, I would want no part of it, I would never cut ties with my family and friends. I know someone who asked about Witness Protection once because they were getting ready to testify in Federal Court against some dangerous individuals and they were laughed at and told "That's only in the movies".

I can depend on myself, those close to me and also God, the Universe, Source, whatever name you are comfortable with. I would not depend on nor trust any government agency even though I worked for one for several years.

Same with me, I would just ignore the whole situation. I know it doesn't sound very brave, but I would be terrified to take the witness stand again some of those mean people.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I might consider phoning in a 'anonymous tip' from a public telephone. The police often rely on these to solve crimes, don't they? Whose to say if the perpetrators saw me. If it was someone I knew well, that's another matter, and I might not turn them in. I would certainly not turn in a family member, but some people would.

By PA law, the witness must come forward and give all information to the police, if they have witnessed any crime. However, there are cases where people (witnesses) will just turn the other cheek instead of coming forward because of fear. The excuse cops hear most is "I didn't want to get involved." The real truth is that they were scared for fear of repercussions.

Good luck finding a public telephone, anymore. Most of the outdoor ones are gone, in our area. The ones remaining in Casinos around here are few, and watched by cameras.

There seems to be an air of distrust expressed by many posters here. 'Course, like-thinking and like-believing folks tends to gravitate together, with the occasional dissenter thrown in here and there just to create a bit of controversy! imp

Imp, we still have public phone booths in many places that actually work here in Canada, one right across from where I live.

Public/payphones are few and far between here (and this is a large city). We used to have a lot of them, but over the years they’ve been removed. They exist, just hard to find.

The police dept has a “Crime Stoppers” anonymous tip phone line which also offers a reward or varying sizes (sometimes quite large). I’m not sure exactly how it works (getting the reward money (cash reward) to the person), but I hear it’s quite effective. Once on the newscast they explained the mechanics of how they do it, but I missed most of what was said. Not sure if I would call in or not.
