Your bestest, favorite group singing their greatest hit.

I know this is petty, when you think of all the things important going on, but this irks the hell out of me. I kind of left the concert going a long time ago. So, when there's a tour of a great old band, it's cool to see them one more time. After you get over the shock of how old they got, you wait for their greatest hit. When you hear those familiar first notes of their all time hit; on stage, the lead singer says, "Everybody sing along." Now, the whole place is singing the song. Well, I didn't pay hundreds of dollars for the best seats to hear the turkey next to me sing!!!! I want the band to sing. Yes, I know this is really, really petty, but for me, the "sing along" ruins the concert for me.

Classical music fans have a choice. We can go to, say, a performance of Handel's Messiah and listen to the singers and orchestra; or we can go to a local Messiah sing-along and get to sing along with the orchestra and soloists.

If the Beatles could get together and come back here for another concert, I would hope to go with the friend who went with me back then and the friend who couldn't make the concert, and do what we did then -- sing along with the band.

But yeah, I get wanting to the hear the band, not the audience. But I've been listening to the (way too) many folk concerts on PBS recently and all the audience members seem quite tuneful when they sing along, like the audiences I used to enjoy hearing singing along back when PBS broadcast the Boston Pops Christmas and Fourth of July concerts.

I guess it depends on the band. I've seen both Darius Rucker and the Oak Ridge Boys a bunch of times. The Oaks have always done audience participation. The last time I saw Darius was maybe ten years ago. Some of the songs became sing-alongs spontaneously...everyone knew all the words and it was great fun.

Then midway he talked to the audience about how his road crew had introduced him to the music of David Allen Coe. It sure surprised me, Darius has been outspoken against racism from the beginning. DAC has written songs nasty enough to make Paula Deen gasp. But no he said there was some real good music in there.

Then he led everyone in a rousing "You Never Even Called Me By My Name"...one of the most enjoyable concerts ever!

"I was drunk the day my Ma got out of prison and I went to pick her up in the rain. But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck, she got run over by a da**ed ol' train."

One of the best song endings in CW music history.........

" A friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song and he told me it was the perfect country and western song, and after reading it I sent him back a letter and told him it was not the perfect country and western song because he hadn't said anything at all about Momma, or trains, or trucks, or prison, or gettin' drunk..."

I totally agree with fuzzybuddy. I hate the sing along also. I pretty much can carry a tune but don't like to sing in public. I'll hum a tune that I have stuck in my head while going about my daily routine but that's as far as it goes. It does ruin the concert for me and usually that "turkey" sitting next to me singing along is my hubby. I swear he is tone deaf. I love my country and western groups and I think the harmony of the Statler Brothers, and Sons of the Pioneers is fantastic. Another group that I'm not sure is around yet were the four Guys. I must say I do enjoy the 4 tenors from Canada. I think even if you aren't religious when they sing Amazing Grace anyone will get goose bumps.
