Your three suggestions for a new retiree?

1. Find things that you love to do and do them as often as you can.
2. Make sure your finances are in good order and use the time to learn how to become more financially savvy (if necessary) See linked article for tips.
3. Be socially active. Stay connected with family and friends, even those who are still working and participate here on Senior Forum. :D

I'm not retired yet and I don't plan on being financially secure. I think I will be fine but will have to watch money. And that's OK.

Anything you didn't do while you were working, do that. Do you like to craft, games, puzzles. I'd be sure to get out and walk a little every day. I don't know your dwelling, if in an apartment type home or house.

Learn something new that you have always wanted to learn. For me it was learning to play a guitar. I already knew how to read music as I play the French Horn for seven years while growing up. But playing that for fun in retirement would drive my wife and neighbors crazy, so a Classical Guitar (nylon strings w/softer sounds) was my choice. I have been at it for about 3 months now and I am really enjoying it, I try to practice daily for 20-30 minutes, and I can now pick out a song or two, but still struggling with adding in multiple notes and/or cords, but it is all coming along. In time I might find a teacher, but so far, I am using books and the internet to teach me...

I have always had a lot of things I like to do that keep me busy, but if you are one who does not have a lot of interests that you are already doing, then work at finding things you want to do. It may require going somewhere to learn how to do some things, but at this point that just adds to the fun of being retired...

Enjoy, have fun and Congratulations...not everyone gets to retire!

1. Review your health status if a change is needed to help with enjoying your retirement long term. Start adjusting your lifestyle if needed.
2. Review your finances. Would you be ready for an unexpected large costly event?
3. Set goals. Even in retirement looking forward to achieving something you want to do is worth it. Once you have achieved it or close to it look for something else you couldn't do before retiring.

What are the three main suggestions you can offer a new retiree for the first year.
Don't have too much to add to what others have said:

1 Access your health and finances so you can be realistic and improve both where you can.

2 Travel or do things you want to do someday, now or soon. As you age it will only get harder.

3 Take some of that spare time and do some exercising, you will feel better for it.

Best of luck to you, just the fact that you are asking makes me think you will do fine!

We greatly enjoyed traveling around the US, Canada and Mexico in our small 2 people trailer. We enjoyed about 20 National parks and many other sights. Not that expensive unless you elect to buy a jumbo rig.

Remember: never again will you be as young as you are right now.

Set a schedule - laundry day, shopping day, etc.

Don't make any major purchases for a little while, until you get your bearings.

Give yourself permission to do nothing, to just sit down and relax, and ENJOY IT!

Three things?
TAKE. A. NAP!

Allow yourself to slow down and enjoy.
Hug tighter and longer.
Learn to be a bit selfish.

Stop living on Someday Isle ... "Some day I'll go there" or "Some day I'll do that." If not now, then when?

Collect good memories. They will keep you warm when you can no longer make them.

Live each day to its fullest as long as it does no harm to others.

1. Don't be forced into volunteering unless you decided yourself that is what you want to do.
2. Down size; you really don't need all that junk.
3. If living alone, find yourselves a partner. It's cheaper 2 living together, more fun and if you live in Canada, you will find the nights a lot warmer with someone else rather than yourself alone.
