Zinc?

I saw a very interesting online video today about a doctor speaking about Zinc and Covid. I'm sure there will be some people that will disagree with him. I had heard about Zinc quite a few times. The last time I went grocery shopping, I decided to look for Zinc but was not able to find it. I probably could have gone to the pharmacy. I ordered some on line. I will not take it daily but will take it if I feel a cold coming on or maybe once a week. I have a feeling this may become like a toilet tissue and lysol issue..hard to find at some point.

The doctor stated people deficiency in zinc are prone to suffer the most if they catch any type of virus; cold, flu, Covid. There were numerous comments on the site and people swore by zinc..that it helped with colds and other health benefits.

Is anyone currently taking Zinc?

Zink is generally one of the ingredients in most good daily multivitamins. I take a "men's over 50" pill every morning after breakfast, and the label says it contains 11mg. of Zinc, which is the recommended daily dose.

The one I ordered is 30 mg, which I will take 1/2. I eat foods that contain Zinc. Maybe that's why I don't catch colds.. I drink about 3 to 4 oz of organic beet juice every night..was not aware it contained Zinc. :p

If you're zinc deficient, it will probably do you good. Otherwise, it just dissolves in your blood and comes out in your urine, unless it's the kind that dissolves in fat, in which case it could do you harm if you take too much.

I've taken vitamins and never could detect any benefit, other than my urine smelling and turning yellow. That said, I have symptoms consistent with a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency, so I've been thinking about trying some, even though it will probably just be a waste of money.

The eyes use and require a high level of zinc. Those with macular degeneration would benefit from taking additional zinc. It is also in the eye vitamins that are available across the counter. I have been taking extra zinc since the start of the pandemic. Well, for that matter, I haven't been sick one day since I started taking the zinc, whether I should contribute it to the additional zinc or the D3.

I don't like taking Zinc. The doctor told me to take it when I had COVID and it left a terrible metal taste in my mouth so he removed it from my medication list. Instead, he gave me a list of foods that contained Zinc and suggested eating more of those foods, which I did.

Years ago, I read that the CDC recommended taking 50 mg of zinc to help offset getting the common cold. It was supposed either prevent colds and make them be less severe and last for a shorter time. So I did that for several years during cold season, and I did not get a cold.

I decided to look it up again, in case I was heading for a zinc overdose. The article wasn't there. I quit using the zinc. And I still did not get a cold. I was rarely exposed to large crowds of people except when I attended plays. Apparently, everyone I know is tired of the farm show, so I never went there either. I am going next year (I hope) because I want to see pigs and sheep, and any other farm animals I've never met in person.

This year, I've decided that, in tandem with the flu vaccine, I will be mask wearing anyway. So I figure I'm not going to get either colds or the flu. Of course, I don't go anywhere and see only two people in person, so if this works it may be just because I am not exposed to germs (or enough germs). I have cancer, so I have to take extreme measures to protect myself, according to my oncologists.

I'm not surprised that a doctor connects catching colds easily to a zinc deficiency. I used to catch colds either from my husband who was always talking in close proximity to those he interacted with and who shook so many hands. My youngest grandson used to infect me too because he got colds frequently. Once I started taking Zinc, I no longer caught their colds and I didn't get the flu again either. I have never taken the flu shot and the one year I was considering taking it, I read that the efficacy was below 50%, so I decided to just keep my immune system boosted. Since I started taking it, I haven't had a "real" cold in several years. I've gotten what seemed very mild cold symptoms a couple of times, but they disappeared in a couple of days.

I take a zinc vege-cap most days of the week (only miss if I fall asleep before I finish taking my nightly meds). Zinc should be taken with food. I get my zinc from the GNC in the mall. I'm sure it can be ordered online as well, not only from GNC but Lucky Vitamin, Amazon and Ebay. All should carry the supplement. Zinc has so many health benefits that I will continue to take it rather than wait for symptoms to develop.

Zinc is one of the many vitamins and supplements that a person....especially us older folks...should take on a daily basis. I began taking a daily "adults over 50" vitamin several years ago, and I think this has helped maintain fairly good health. Just "eating right" is often Not enough to insure that we get all the nutrients that we need. A few cents/day for a good vitamin pill is money well spent, IMO.

When I was working, it seemed that I had an endless series of head colds, every Winter. Much of that was due to being around a lot of people almost daily...many of which were also sneezing and snorting. Since retiring, I've had very few colds, and can't remember the last time I had the flu.....Knock Wood.

My Doctor told me to take zinc, vitamin C and D3 after she told me she didn't feel comfortable recommending I get the Covid vaccines due to my health issues. I was already taking D3 so added the others.
That's the same advice my Honorary Daughter got from the nurse when she got a mile case of COVID. She had gone to the ER for something else entirely and did not need to be admitted.

I drink organic beet juice as well to lower my blood pressure. My latest readings show it is working. And I also take Zinc.
