Porn In A Public Library

Maybe you could go get it from the library and watch it with your grandson tomorrow since it will be Wednesday.
I'm a good grandmother. He is five. His parents are in control, not me. He's with me right now. He's napping.

My grandmother did not choose the book for me. I chose it for myself upon recommendation from a friend.

I've been getting up every morning for three days at 3 am. I don't think I'm getting anyone's point. I'm exhausted. Maybe even a wee bit grumpy.

"Fourteen US states banned the book as pornography. The first was Massachusetts, whose attorney general cited 70 references to sexual intercourse, 39 illegitimate pregnancies, 7 abortions, and "10 descriptions of women undressing in front of men" as reasons for banning the novel."

Good heavens, my parents were perverts. And another thing, why is most masturbation poetry written by women?

I haven't seen the movie, but what's appropriate is relative (no moral absolutes). When I was 19, I bought a paperback of The Grapes of Wrath off a rotating display rack at a gas station. Halfway through, I lost the book on a camping trip. I went to the local small town library and couldn't find it in the Steinbeck section. I went to the card catalog, and indeed the library had it, so it must have been out on loan. I kept checking for two weeks, and finally went to the Librarian to ask about it. She was an old lady, who informed me, "Yes we have it, but we keep it under the counter, because well,... you know." <??? Those were her exact words.>

I asked if I could check it out, and she told me they didn't check it out, but I could read it in the Library. So every day I would come in, and she would hand it to me, and I would sit down at a table and read for an hour. A week later, she told me they had discussed the matter and decided I could check the book out. Oddly, I had adjusted to the quiet library and said, it was OK. I'd be fine finishing the book there. On a visit to the Library long after I had finished the book, I noticed it was back on the shelf in full view of the public.

Small town foibles can be interesting sometimes.

Caligula (1979) - IMDb Especially if it was the uncut version according to what I'm reading, it shouldn't have ended up in a library for all ages (unless there's an adult section?)
Based on IMDB description, and it does sound like the one @Chet saw, it does need to be reconsidered for being in general consumption.

For anyone that hasn’t, do check out the IMDB link that Kate provided.

I checked out the movie Caligula, who was the mad Roman emperor ruling from 37 to 41 AD. The opening credits showed the magazine Penthouse as the producer. That was the first clue.

As the movie progressed, it became clear what the movie was. It was pure, uncensored and raw porn of every description with explicit sexuality. For good measure, there were several scenes of sadistic torture and killing.

I’m not a prude. I have seen raw porn (only for research purposes of course 😇), and this movie was right up there.

I wonder if the library even knows about it. They certainly can’t read every book or watch every movie to see if it’s appropriate to put it on their shelf. If they think it’s OK I'm fine with it. Should I inform them or let it go?
I dont see how it can be too shocking, we are subject to ourselves getting various enthusiastic screwing nightly on the networks news--and not so much as a dinner, smile, flower, or I will call you later-

that's juste under 25% of all states - I wonder what that means - you have 25% highly moral states - who wanna become more immoral? ; pornography is consider normal human behaviors for the majority of americans? collecting stats is one thing ; analyzing their meanings a whole different ball game?

As a Let It Be Counterculture person, libraries, the Internet, and public areas where children and youth have access, are places where pornography and media with violence against innocent humans ought be made ILLEGAL. And IMO, ought be discouraged within society though allowed with limitations for those adults that go out of their way to obtain whatever as long as it is in private.

-it is up to parents and guardians to set the rules for their kids and protect them from violent
images and sexy stuff, if this is what they want. Not easy on the internet or public places. It is not the job of the library
or other places to shield them and restrict free access to resources. This is the position of all libraries I know of or should be.
Where I live-- harmless public libraries get bomb threats from censors and crazies.
An innocent picture of a nude person doesn't hurt any normal kid with a normal upbringing.. It might be educational. The nude body is not "dirty" itself, you must know.
I agree with you (David) about violence, to a point, but it is protected by Freedom of Speech and audiences, including kids, are into this and crave it.
You say you are a Let It Be Counterculture guy, but your message is inconsistent. Usually females argue for this
"protect the children" view. Now creating and displaying child porn/violence is totally different and I oppose that
BTW Kids raised in a strict religious home are sheltered from this stuff.

"inconsistent" in your context seems to imply a need for black and white thinking that I am very much NOT about but rather think with relativism as is appropriate. That is why I have socially prospered and been accepted so well in what many consider the most diverse cultural modern urban region on the planet. It is true I dislike the choices many adults choose in living their lives, including pornography, however that only goes as far as public advice, voting, and advocating reasonably restrictive legal changes including what might be too easily accessed by children. That is what we Counterculture folks refer to as "Let It Be".

Yap! There sure is a a lot of really bad, disgusting movies out there. More and more are released every year. The masses seem to like it. The perverts love them too. It shows there are more perverts out there just like them. Criminals love the movies too because sometimes they get ideas on how to commit crimes and get away with them.

Guess I'm not "cool" anymore. I prefer my westerns from the 50s/60s: no swearing, no sex, great stories and I feel good when I go to bed. None of that "I hate humanity" stuff for me! I can't take that new garbage anymore and you know, I'm glad!
