When we lived in Hampshire, we visited relatively few historic houses, forts etc.. Our closest one was Stansted Park and a bit further away was the preserver remains of Fishbourne Roman palace. Overlooking Portsmouth are the massive Napoleonic forts built when the threat of invasion from France was a possibility. I expect you might know them, Hollydolly.

Fort Nelson overlooking Portsmouth. In the end, Napoleon never tried to invade and the forts became known as 'Palmerston's follies', after the name of the UK prime minister at the time.
Having retired and moved back north, we decided that we would do the 'tourist ' things and visit historic houses and castles in Scotland.
