Hot!

This is a question for the women. When you went through menopause, do you take any HRT? If you did, what did you take and did it work?

I have had it with these hot flashes. I've tried a few different supplements, Estroven, but I am not finding much relief for that condition. I am really considering HRT. I haven't before because of the side effects, but I'm at the point where I think it may be worth the risk.

I've had hot flashes (and still do) since I was 50 (I'm now 72) and in the beginning, my doctor recommended Estrace since I refused to take Premarin after learning how it was manufactured. I took it for about 10 years. The real side effect was weight gain for me. I've never been able to get rid of the extra weight. When we moved to AZ 5 years ago, my new doctor asked me why I had been on it so long because of the risk of breast cancer in long term administration. He took me off it and my hot flashes came right back. I tried OTC remedies, but none of them worked, so I continue to have hot flashes. My doctor says I'll have them the rest of my life. There could be worse things then hot flashes so I don't complain. I'd rather not have chemicals in my body anyway.

Be careful with HRT medications.

I took HRT for severe hot flushes for a very early menopause at 45 ( ''flushes'' is the word here).... HRT was in it's infancy and I was only on it for a few weeks and started getting horrible pains in my legs.. so the doctor took me off immediately. I was never offered any alternatives, ...but fortunately my 'change' lasted all of 6 months, so I was very lucky in that sense!!

I had total hyst. at age 38 and had a wonderful Surgeon/Dr who put me on Premarin very carefully tapered to zero over 2 1/2 years and I never had a moment's discomfort. I didn't know how it was made then. Not going to speculate at this time on whether I would have done anything differently.

Gave my mother breast cancer. Didn't have all the information back 30-35 years ago that is available now.

I agree to be VERY careful able taking HRT’s.
My choice was a natural one. I took black cohash and evening primrose oil which worked out great.
Here’s list of safe natural supplements that help with no nasty side effects

Natural remedies for hot flashes & menopausal symptoms

Black cohash
Vitamin E
Evening Primrose Oil
Flaxseed
Apple Cider Vinegar
Sage
Vitamin B
Red Raspberry

I took it very briefly and then got off of it. I tried everything else I could find, but nothing did much, if any good. Hot flashes gradually abated and finally went away. I only had problems with them for about a year.

I had a few hot flashes but they didn't last long...maybe 6 months or so. I never took any HRT and thankfully cruised right through "the change."

I've never taken HRT meds. I was too afraid of their long term effects. I had a very good doctor friend who warned me of the potential damage...not that I was seriously considering them anyway, but man those hot flashes were devastating!!

I did take Amberen for a year or so, during the worst of the hot flashes, which pretty much eliminated them while I was taking the pills. It's a drug and estrogen free formulation that did the job for me. Both my personal doctor and my doctor friend (who is extremely conservative) gave it a thumbs up in terms of its safety.

Although I do know that we men know nothing :) but........we do go through what is called Andropause , said to be nearly the same thing. I had it for a while....and the black cohash really did help.

Thank you for all your opinions and advice. I will do some research and talk it over with my doctor before deciding on anything. I thought at the most, I would have these hot flashes for a couple of years. It's going on 6 years now and I think they are getting worse, not better. It would be nice to be able to lay down next to my husband to sleep without instantly flashing and sweating. ugh!!

My hot flashes started when I was 49..I just turned 60 and still have them.

I'd rather deal with them with a $1.00 hand fan than put hormones in my body.

That's just me. I don't take any medicines other than Ibuprofen.
