World’s population is projected to nearly stop growing by the end of the century

" World population growth is projected to flatten in coming decades. For the first time in modern history, the world’s population is expected to virtually stop growing by the end of this century, due in large part to falling global fertility rates, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of new data from the United Nations.

By 2100, the world’s population is projected to reach approximately 10.9 billion, with annual growth of less than 0.1% – a steep decline from current levels. Between 1950 and today, the world’s population grew between 1% and 2% each year, with the number of people rising from 2.5 billion to more than 7.7 billion. "

Well, people are not marrying like they did once....and they do not want the responsibility / burden of raising a child. Just generational changes I suppose? And if enough generations change.....then basically mankind itself changes.

The predictions seem shocking to us....but those living the change, will never notice.

The world will keep turning.

It seems that, for the most part, any nation's population will be controlled either by government or by nature. I find it difficult to decide which is the more compassionate.

And yet....most studies have placed the Maximum Sustainable Population levels to between 6 to 8 billion people. The population in the developed nations and societies has been slowing, while the poorer nations and people have continued to grow virtually unchecked. The numbers of those living in poverty are rising well beyond past rates....and things like malnutrition and lack of clean water and sanitation are becoming more of a problem. Then, when the predictions of climate change are factored in....with the impact on agriculture, and coastal land mass...it becomes obvious that humanity is headed for a "tipping point" in the next century....if not sooner. With the advances in automation, robotics, and Artificial Intelligence, Humans are becoming increasingly obsolete. When the Half of the population which is self sustaining is having to support the Half that is relying on various forms of Aid, things are going to erupt.

Really glad to be part of the 7 billion plus now. I can't imagine the chaos/poverty/lack of natural
resources/ that will be part of approximately 10.9 billion. One resource, refined oil for gasoline consumption just in in america How much gasoline is used yearly by the US? Americans consume roughly 9.32 barrels of gasoline a day, making that 3,401 barrels a year. Which adds up to be 136,875 million gallons a year.

Interesting you would bring that up

When traditional marriage and family bit the dust, that's when the birthrate declined to below replacement rate in the West. And that's when western leaders [political and corporate] began to favor massive foreign immigration as a means to shore up the declining Western population. But as you can see by the topic article... massive immigration is only a temporary fix... because eventually the birthrate will decline to below replacement rate worldwide.

I think that by 2100 we [the world] will have gone electric as it applies to most vehicles....While it may not end oil usage/consumption , it will greatly reduce the drain on supplies.

Hell by then, who knows what will be the transportation norm?? Keep in mind that 100 yrs or so ago the auto was new , and in large part, only for the rich. Granted by "19" they had made over 100,000 and the price dropped to $350.00. 100,000 cars spread out over this huge country meant that it was indeed rare to see one.
And also keep in mind that in "19" $350.00 was not chump-change.

Another point, airplanes......in what? less than 50 years we [they] went from a spindly , single passenger/pilot contraption....to multi-passenger 300 mph+ jets.

2100?? I wouldn't even venture a guess........

Wouldn't that mean people would have to stop having sex? Makes me wonder if this is possible. I don't believe fertility could become that bad.

In economic terms, children are an "inferior good" - the more money you have the fewer children you want. As the world's poorest populations escapes poverty, birth rates go down.

Econ 101

When I look around at my home and possessions, particularly those made with plastic and polluting components, then multiply my stuff by the number of inhabitants in the US and other wealthy nations, I shake my head at the "progress" made over the past 100 years.

Where is all this crap going to end up? We have no place to stash our trash, whether that trash is atmospheric CO2 from burning fossil fuels or toxic by-products from making all the crap we've decided we can't live without. It's not like we can jettison our waste off the planet.

I expect that the planet's human population will be thinned dramatically by some combination of large wars, local killings over land and resources, starvation, lack of clean water, pollution-related diseases, or pestilence. Likely sooner rather than later I'm sorry to say.

Humans are very slow to read the writing on the wall.

I don't why everyone thinks there will be little sex in 2100. We'll still need replacements.

Maybe we won't. Don't you think science will have found and perfected a way by then to clone our failing organs so that death won't happen for those wealthy enough or brave enough who want to go on living. Jus' thinkin'. :eek:nthego:

Your friendly local doctor can do a minor surgical procedure that changes sex from procreational to recreational. It is just as much fun that way.

Capitalism requires ever growing consumer demand and ever expanding markets.

However, global birthrates have been dropping the past several decades. Sometime in this century global population will begin to decline.

The capitalist economy as we have known it has never experienced a sustained drop in population. No more ever increasing demand. No more ever expanding markets. A future of deflation... a death knell for the current global capitalist economy.

First world nations were first hit by falling birthrates and an ever aging population. To offset this, third world immigration has been encouraged into the USA and Europe. But this is only a temporary fix, because birthrates in third world nations are also decreasing.

Ironically, FOX TV news discussed this same topic today.
One of them mentioned how the value of real estate would plummet.

With the decline of world population, the demand for everything would plummet...
so all those extra no longer needed commodities and suppliers would go bust !
