A local school district has ended the valedictorian achievement recognition . Saying that it makes those that could not compete at that level, feel like they are something less, and could leave life-long emotional scars. Well, in a sense, academically , they are.

Ah but rest assured.....the football/basketball hero's will remain,and continue to be awarded for their on field achievements. And there will continue to be a homecoming king & queen.

Just after hearing that.....I read up on the K-12 program. A free public school program, where the student does not even need to attend "school" . His/her education can be had from home via computer....all the way to graduation/diploma?..........Just how many diplomas do you think will actually be earned here?

Folks, I think we are heading in the wrong direction......
 

Being home studied is nothing new, or maybe I am misreading the OP. Any child that is home studied may still compete in their school district’s sports, band, or any other program.

The program that I am keeping my eye on are Charter Schools for different reasons. A lot of people are becoming wealthy through opening a charter school or a series of charter schools.

I am mostly concerned with the level of education. The rules aren’t quite the same as public schools.
 
The purpose of a school is to prepare children for life in the adult world. This includes being part of society, it's not just about academic achievements.
 

About valedictorian achievement recognition. Granted not everybody in the school will get that award, nor will they all be Prom King & Queen, MVPs, Science Fair winners, Spelling Bee winners, Hall Monitors, etc., etc. Yes, life may not be fair, but somehow I don't foresee an intervention group for valedictorian achievement recognition losers. If you aren't curtailing the sports awards and others, this is a pretty lame excuse for cutting academic achievement.
 
Growing up should be about learning how to deal with kid-sized/age appropriate problems and situations.

IMO it is cruel and unfair to shelter children from every difficult and unpleasant aspect of life until they hit some magic age like 18 or 21 and then expect them to go out and face the world with no preparation or training.

A point missed by an entire generation,and now being passed on to a second.....:(

Rosemarie, you need to tell the teachers this as they are out
to "Train" children to pass exams, not prepare them for life
after school.

I helped a friend to get his further education degree in electrics
and I was very surprised, alarmed even when I asked him what
the pass mark was, 40% was the reply!

When I studied the electrical engineering, the pass mark was
normally 85%, but one or two subjects were 95%.

So the education in this country in my opinion is not as it
should be.
