Caller ID is getting useless

Mine usually says "Unavailable" and sometimes "Wireless Caller" then at times "Invalid Number" and once in a great while it says "Private Caller." I answer at times only to get either a survey taker or prerecorded message. It would be nice if a real caller would call that wants enjoyable conversation. :giggle:
 
If it's a name or number I don't know, I don't answer. I let my answering machine get it and sometimes they leave a message but not always. Then, if they don't leave a message, I do a search for the phone number online. Most of the time, the numbers will show up as telemarketers and then I block them.
 
I just stupidly answered the phone because the same number came up many many times so I thought if I finally answered they would leave me alone. Well they said they were going to deduct $225.00 from my account to renew my service contract I had with them. I said "I never had an account with them." The creep on the phone who barely spoke English said I did have an account. After telling him numerous times that he was wrong he said I would have to fill out a form that he would ask me questions. I said "No I will not answer any questions and I do not have an account." His reply was go "F" yourself. I asked what he said and he repeated it. So I responded "No you "F" yourself" and I hung up. So if you get a call from

I got rid of caller ID long time ago if I know you..you should leave a message on my machine otherwise you don't want to talk to ME.
 
O have noticed that the Mobile numbers, unknowns, privates etc are always spam callers. One thing I have noticed locally, is that the exchange "204" is always a spam caller. You know 204.4324 or such numbers. I do not know the validity of my theory, but I never answer calls from that exchange.
 
Just don't answer if you don't recognize the caller. If it's something important, it will automatically go to voice mail where they can leave a message. So when someone leaves a message, I listen. Otherwise I simply don't answer unknown caller calls. This may not work for everyone if you just have to know, but it does work well for me.
 
Sometimes I'll answer the phone, sometimes I wait for a message on my answering machine. I can tell when I get the same sales calls because after a few of them, the caller gets frustrated at my recorded greeting & leaves a recording of a dial tone. I guess he thinks that annoys me, but it makes me LOL.

I can't believe I answered it today. I usually just let it go to my answering machine !
 
I respond to telemarketers like this..(if one gets through)
.
"I am really interested in what you are selling but I was just leaving for an important meeting.
Please give me your home phone number and I will call you back around Mid-night"

I usually hear a click on the line... :giggle:
 
Last year, I got the same sales call over & over, even after speaking to the owner of the company.
The call starts with a recording about a great deal on carpet cleaning, then says "Press "1" if your want to talk to someone.
I pressed "1" & when the guy came on the line, I told him to hang on while I get the homeowner - he wants his carpets cleaned.
Every couple of minutes, I came back to the phone & asked, "Did he pick up yet?" "No? "Please hang on."
After 15 minutes of that, I told him, "Well, I'm the homeowner & I'm not interested; I just wanted to waste your time, too."
That did it. No more calls.
 
I used to terrorize the robocall folks but one day I realized that their lives must be pretty rough if the only job they can find is working in a sleazy boiler room operation so now I just quietly hang up and save us both the aggravation.

This exact strategy works well for me, too.
 
It's just that I've missed some important calls because I don't answer unless it a name or number I know. I don't know why the caller ID name isn't showing up anymore, just the number. Could it be because I have enrolled in NOMOROBO?
 
I use the same system that a lot of you do. If I don't recognize the number, I don't pick up. If it's a "real person" (i.e., a legitimate phone call), they will leave a message. I just got one a few minutes ago, from a doctor's office that was calling to change the date of an appointment. They left a message on voice mail.

I think part of the problem is that we need to retrain ourselves not to jump to grab the phone every time it rings, as everybody used to do in the old days. Most of the time, it's a nuisance call. If we make a mistake and don't pick up when it is a genuine call, they will simply leave a message. I guess we all need to chill out about the need to jump to attention every time the phone rings.

Also, in my case, I cut down the number of fake calls drastically by getting rid of my land line. A lot of people have said, "Oh, I'd be afraid to do that!" Why? How many phones do we need? Just switch to your cell phone, inform everyone that this is your new number (the same as if you'd moved!) and enjoy the silence. For some reason, the cell phone gets a lot fewer robocalls, etc. than the land line used to. Plus, it saves me $40 a month!
 
Got rid of landline long time ago. Just use consumer cellular flip phone. Unlimited calls and text for $25.00 a month plus tax. If I don't recognize the # I don't answer.
 
There used to be some Web sites that you can type in a number and it would tell you who it was. Now it either says someting to the effect that the number doesn't exist, or you have to pay for that info.
