Buying used furniture vs. renting a furnished dwelling

Explain why people won't buy upholstered furniture at a garage sale because they are afraid of bugs and germs, yet will rent a furnished residence when they don't know who was there before them or how good the former tenant's hygiene or housekeeping skills were.

If a room you stay in is infested with critters, you have very good odds of bring them home with you. It's how they spread so easily and quickly.

Well, I will never buy a piece of upholstered furniture used. My nephew bought a very gently used easy chair for my sister that, unbeknownst to him, was infested with bed bugs. Doc said the awful, itchy "rash" my sis broke out in all over was bed bug bites and we ended up having to throw out about half of her worldly possessions because they had gotten into practically everything. Then the bug people had to fumigate two or three times.

It was AWFUL!!!

I had a nasty experience with a rental house and bed bugs. The renters brought them in (probably with their furniture) then, after several months, called to to complain about getting bites. I called an exterminator and we went in to investigate. He lifted up a mattress coroner and 2 or 3 BB's scurried away.

The renters left shortly after that visit (leaving a huge mess inside and outside) and I call for the exterminator to come, she did her thing with chemicals then had to come back 2 more times. Total cost was $1000 plus my elbow grease to clean the walls from blood stains (BB poop). YUCK! Kinda made me rethink the whole germ and parasite possibilities.

I've given up holding yard sales because most everyone wants to buy stuff for pennies on the dollar (or less), some dodgy people get to come to my house and the amount of money generated is laughable for the time spent. Now unwanted stuff goes to the local Habitat for Humanity store or some other charity.

During my college days everyone bought and traded used furniture. Four of us had a house and we picked up a used couch. When we got it home we pulled the cushions off to vacuum and found a baggies with several dime packs of cocaine. No surprise because at SIU in Carbondale, IL drugs grew on trees.

I'm sure you turned the drugs over to the proper authorities.

Garage sale furniture many people avoid because it’s not only used but now it’s in a garage sale.

Many will wonder if they have ever been left outside in the rain? Is the garage damp and mildewy? How long has it been for sale in unfavourable conditions?

At least used furniture in Hotels and Motels and usually in favourable conditions inside; proper humidity and temperature etc.

But the main thing to remember is that we never really know why others do what they do nor should we waste time trying to figure them out.
Easier said then done!

Any house that has mice is sure to have mouse urine on the upholstery.
Most certainly. Mice get everywhere and leave a disgusting mess. Some of it can be cleaned up, some of it can’t. Most people aren’t going to clean furniture before they sell it and most people aren’t going to want to spend the money cleaning used furniture after they purchase it.
